Roberts Hearings Still Scheduled for Tuesday

Does anyone else think the confirmation hearings on Judge John Roberts, scheduled for Tuesday, should be continued so that Congress can focus on how to help those in need from Katrina - particularly the displaced persons from New Orleans?

As I remember, Justice O'Connor told President Bush she would stay on until Roberts was confirmed, so why not ask her to stay on one more term?

Armando at Daily Kos has more thoughts on this.

They'll have plenty of time to overturn Roe V. Wade...the hearings can wait.

There should be a moratorium on congressional business like this for two weeks (longer if necessary) in order to make sure everyone - or at the very least - most people are taken care of in New Orleans, Biloxi and other coastal areas affected.

If the dems were not so easily distracted I would say let them start the fish fry. They do not need anymore vacation, which is what it would amount to, if they got an out. The only thing I worry about is that the dems may let him off the hook, like they did with Bush around 9/11. Bush's ratings went up a bit, even ewithhis horrid performance, disaster brings out the worst passivity in people, maybe it is good to wait.

And we didn't shut it down during iraq. But I bet they didn't vote on sup noms or reg biz the week after Pearl Harbor. Sheesh!

sailor - This isn't Peral Harbor. et al - We are in motion to solve the immediate needs. What we need to do now is start a long careful process to figure out: 1. Should we rebuild NO, or just help the people get moved and resettled. After all, this could happen again next month, or next year. 2. If we need to evacuate a city in the future, where can we get the resources, and who should be responsible for pulling the switch? 3. Assuming we have the resources to move them, where should we take them? Where should we store the supplies needed? 4. Who should pay for this? The city/state or the feds? What we DONT need is a bunch of politicians grandstanding for the folks back home.

Yes, PPJ, let's reinvent the wheel. Professional disaster planners have never thought about these items. As for rebuilding New Orleans, we will no sooner let it go than the Italians would Venice. If other countries can manage similar problems, so can the richest country in the world. What we need is an independent commission (truly independent) to find out why the professionals were ignored.

aw - I think the diaster planners, if that makes any sense, has planned for years. Then we get a new wrinkle, a major flood after the fact, and look what we have. As for Venice, it is sinking, so you need another example. Insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different result.

Whoa, a hurricane AND a flood? Who woulda thunk it? I guess that makes it a whole nuther ballgame. Look, we can't do without NO and it's workers. Get thee over to Stratfor and read about NO as a geopolitical prize. link Hope I got the link in the right form.

Actually, New Orleans is sinking, too.

PPJ-at least keep your banter to the topic. AW-great link. Kitt-thanks for reposting it.
Geopolitics caused American presidents to obsess over its safety. And geopolitics will force the city's resurrection, even if it is in the worst imaginable place.
Our President's obsessions seem to lie elsewhere.
