Conservatives Snipe About Miers

by TChris

Children at play:

At one point in the first of the two off-the-record sessions, according to several people in the room, White House adviser Ed Gillespie suggested that some of the unease about Miers "has a whiff of sexism and a whiff of elitism." Irate participants erupted and demanded that he take it back.

The irate conservatives then resorted to the time-honored insult repeller, "I'm rubber and you're glue ..."

There has indeed been sniping within the Right. I saw it all over the blogs. But it is dying down, with about half of Miers' early opponents now either supporting her, or taking a wait & see attitude. The remaining opponents are still very vocal, but even they are starting to drift to the wait and see camp. Tellingly, I'm also seeing quite the influx of Leftie trolls visiting the Rightie blogs, and all of those trolls are doing what they can to encourage a rejection of her nomination. Others on those blogs are noticing this too. Fascinating. I think the R divisions will heal, one way or the other, if not by her confirmation then by her rejection, as more becomes known. But I stand by my earlier prediction that the L divisions will only deepen. The evidence is coming in now, and it confirms just that. Weeks and weeks to go yet. This is already, and is gonna continue to be, fascinating.

Ras: What the hell are you talking about? Just today Novak & Coulter came out screaming against the nomination and the foot soldiers are waging jihad against one another. Personally, I find it highly offensive that the elitist secular right (such as Will, Novak & Coulter) is all but telling "born-agains" to shut up and sit down that only the secular right is entitled to the spoils of Bush & Co. As a person who was raised in that faith community, a faith community that at least one in five Americans belong to, I find it appalling that we aren't entitled to even one seat on the Court, represented here by Miers, rather when given the opportunity we should pass it up to "movement conservatives" who have received every "conservative" seat on the court since the 1930s. Of the Eight justices currently on the court (excluding O'Connor) there are four Catholics, two jews and two mainline protestants, Miers is merely rewarding that community which has overwhelmingly elected Bush. I should mention, that I am a progressive & note that the last two dem presidents are both born agains. - k

While Roberts was presiding over the bench today, bringing down Oregon's Assisted Suicide Law, this is what Conservatives are worried about? Come on! They're using reverse psychology. They think if Liberals think they disapprove of Miers, we'll push her right on through. Conservatives doth protest too much. Roberts is going to go Conservative, and anything Roberts does, Miers will follow obediently behind.

All Writs, I think we're in raging agreement here, actually. I noted that there is indeed still strong vocal opposition to HM from the Right. But my pt was that, if you follow the blogs and their commenters, there's also a real trend toward support. Novak & Coulter et al just ain't part of that trend. I'd say/guesstimate that about half of those who opposed the pick, day one, have shifted over. Those who still oppose her do so primarily on the basis of the lack of a paper trail and therefore - correctly - ask for more information. Whether the in-favor trend continues is tough to predict under such circumstances. The remaining anti-HM Righties are, by definition, harder to convince. And there is still a long ways to go and much to learn. Still, that's the trend I've seen so far. GWG, Roberts is going to go Conservative He has been Conservative all along, provided that one defines "Conservative" to mean "constructionist/constitutionalist of some sort." That's why he was picked, it's what his entire career indicates and it's what he himself showed at his hearings. HM ... she is certainly a strong "conservative" in her private life, to say the least, in the more colloquial/political sense of the word. What the Right is looking to see, however, is will she also be a "Conservative" as a judge, in the same construction/constitutionalist sense as Roberts. Right now, the general trend, as noted, is in her favor, but her judicial philosophy needs to be examined more closely. She's still something of a cipher. Most everyone will say they are c/c, and HM is no exception; deeper q's are needed to confirm just how true to that approach she really is. I expect her to be getting a lot of of those q's from the Right in the next few weeks, correctly so. Not so sure how many of them we'll get from the Left. The Left leadership appears to have decided that they won't oppose her and are working to sell her nomination to their base, a Kafka-esque decision if ever there was one. They might not wanna dig deeper cuz if she's everything Bush says she is, the Left will be enraged at its own leaders. CYA time?

AW, A "christian" seat on the Court? God forbid! I dont really think that that idea will be accepted anytime soon.
