Sen. Leahy to Announce Alito Decision Tomorrow

Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), the ranking Democratic member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, will announce his decision on the Supreme Court nomination of Judge Samuel Alito at 11:00 am Thursday, from the Georgetown University Law Center. The press is invited. His talk is officially titled "The Alito Nomination, The Supreme Court, And Presidential Power." He's expected to oppose Alito.

Sen. Ted Kennedy will announce his opposition to Alito in a speech tomorrow at 1:30 at the Center for American Progress. (received by e-mail.)

So far, Sen. Ben Nelson of Nebraska is the only turncoat. But, several Democrats are up in the air, among them, Carl Levin.

All that's up for grabs now is whether or not the Dems are gonna fb. The history of fb's is one of victory for the Dems. Have they ever seen one defeated? Not on judicial nominations that I can think of, nor on previous fb's in other areas: e.g. against civil rights. Can anyone here think of a Dem fb of the past that was defeated, ever? When Miers was nominated, many on the Right didn't like it and now we have Alito as the nominee - i.e. the Right certainly had no trouble getting what they wanted from their party. And the Left can just as easily get what they want from the D's, including a fb ... if that's what the Left really wants. How about it, Lefties, is Alito worth a real fight? Or is he really not so bad in your eyes that it's worth your effort? Well, we'll know soon enough.

Oh please dear Lord. Make the Dems filibuster Judge Alito. I haven't asked for anything since I asked you to make all those extra chads fall out of the votes for Gore in 2000. Amen, Jim

Come on Ras, you know the dems will lose even if they FB. The GOP has the numbers and political will to nuke a FB. The only question is how noisy will the dems be in their displeasure. They might FB, they did delay the vote a week, but the cynic in me thinks that the vote delay was solely to let O'Connor have more votes hoping for a different result on the abortion decision.
