Sopranos Season Six Begins

I'm counting the hours until the return of the Sopranos tonight. There's lots of media articles on the show today, but be careful, some give away too much. If you weren't a viewer before, you can catch up here. There's also this video recap of Season Five.

And leave it to Newsweek to find a link between the show and the Bush administration:

Sopranos:
America's true First Family is back, with better ratings and firearm-safety record than White House.

Update: Did any of you watch it? What did you think? I thought it was very dark, edgy, angry and ominous. It seems like the feds and snitches are going to play a bigger role this year.

Update: Here's a primer of the characters for new viewers. Analysis of last night's opening episode (warning, spoiler alert, if you haven't seen the show but intend to, stop reading now:

David Chase sent out the four first episodes to reviewers before last night's show. Chicago Tribune Arts Critic Sid Smith gives us a taste of what's to come:

It's not telling too much to reveal that the next few episodes will deal with the gang and Tony's family in crisis. There will be ugly, undisciplined jockeying for money and power, with Silvio (E Street Band member Steve Van Zandt) temporarily in charge, egged on by his Lady Macbeth-like wife (played by Van Zandt's wife, Maureen).

And Tony's nuclear family members must relate as never before. The beast hovering outside their unconventional life is now among them, a creature spawned from their very bosom instead of a rival gangster or even that bear glimpsed by Tony, waiting in the back yard for the right moment to attack.

And may I add, more creditability than Newsweek.

Or Faux Snews, which was spreading anti-American propaganda about a so-called 'civil war" in Iraq last month.

Yes, the Feds are definitely closing in. I know some Sopranos episodes are better than others, but I can't bring myself to grade them and be demanding because it's so far and away much better than anything else on TV. Maybe towards the end of the season I'll be sated enough to discriminate, like suddenly being able to afford good wine. And does everything have to remind us of politics? Is there no escape?

Ah, from the opening shots comin' up the ramp outta the tunnel and onto the Turnpike. Goin' over the Pulaski Skyway past the Statue of Liberty, the pristine waters and refineries of Bayonne, Elizabeth and the Amboys, I'm there. It's the Motherland. The Old Country. And they Say You Can't Go Home Anymore. The real question is, why the hell would you want to? I left Jersey for good in early '73 'cause there were too many people. There's probably twice as many now. It's not that I don't like people. It's just that I seem to feel better when they're not around. Ah, but I kid because I care. I've still got family there. I still visit. It's a good place to be from. If I could afford to live where I grew up, I'd still live in Vermont, but there's no place I'd rather live in Jersey. As for the show. Good, not great. B+ Poor Gene, eh? "Once you enter into this family, there's no gettin' out." Tony on the scale."These shoes must be 15lbs each." The belt's gotta be 10 lbs, easy." Been there, done that. Those are the least of his worries now. Somehow, I think he makes it. Carmella's priorities are still as sound as ever. It's nice to see somebody's got their feet on the ground in that family. [off topic political insults deleted.]

I think I've turned my TV on maybe 3 times in the last 8 or 9 months. And everytime some idiot is screaming at me to buy something absolutely worthless or dangerous to my physical or mental health, you know? Like a war justification or a crackpot case for killing half the world to make it safe for jeezus or a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser or a an incredible Swiffer Wet Jet that will make programmed carbon copy housewives across the nation dance and smile in paradise. Hmmm... now if they just roll 'em all into one product they might be on to something! But I might just turn the damn thing on again for Tony and the family... Maybe we could use some of the Soprano School of Management techniques in the White House? "You're outta here!" as we throw him out the second floor window?

Episode 1 was solid. Of course after 1 1/2 years of waiting I would have probably accepted anything but I do think it was a good episode. It's always hard when this show comes back becasue it has to remind you why you like it so much. They let you see all the gumbas doing there thing, give you some nice dialog in the badda bing and you say..."Man I love this show" and after 15 minutes you forget that they made you wait so long. I loved the scene with Tony and his sister ragging her husband and his toy train collection. Classic Sapranos. It seems to me that Johnny in Prison and the Feds closing in will be the biggest themes of the year. That is if Tony doesn't die. Highly unlikely. Anyway keep up the Sapranos posts.

Slado, I will, every Sunday night while it's on. I also think AJ, Tony's son, will get into some major trouble this season. I don't think Tony will die. I think the producers want him incapacitated so they can show others in his camp feuding internally and trying to take the reins while Tony tries to maintain control from his sickbed. There were several references to "if something should happen to Tony" and "I could make captain."

I've got a feeling Meadow is gonna be drawn in. Mark my words. You know the premium Tony puts on Family. On blood. She's another Michael Corleone. AJ's another Fredo. Christopher can't be trusted. Sylvio and Paulie Walnuts have reached their ceilings. Junior speaks for himself. So does Janice and Bobby even though she's gonna put up some squawk. All roads lead to Meadow.

Meadow and her fiance are going to implode. I won't be surprised if he gets killed. Maybe she'll want revenge.

Thanks TL. Great thougts from you and charlie. I love the meadow thoughts. Also why is Pu$$y's wife driving a Mercedes? Who was Junior talking about when he shot Tony? Did anyone else freak out when they saw Adriana talkling Carmela? For a minuted there I feared a Dallas/bobby move..."You were dreaming". Anyways look forward to the posts.

Meadow is the next "don"... Slado, Junior was referring to "Pu$$y Malenga (sp?), someone capped in like season 1 or 2. Tony will be incapcitated, Christopher will be his hand-picked successor until he is rubbed out and the Jersey crew implodes momentarily while meadow gets everything together and starts whacking NY soldiers ruthlessly. I see that the producers have almost completely ruled out a RICO case against Tony, they killedoff a long time rat, and another one... Hmmm... Either way, Tony and Christopher do not make it to the January "mini-season". AJ goes to jail for beating someone mercilessly, or having someone beat. Meadow takes the reigns. Carmela advises her. Meadow has Silvio whacked after he whacks Paulie.
