Stupid Politician of the Week

As this post points out, the Constitution prohibits any religious test for public office. Somebody needs to give a copy of the Constitution to Rep. Virgil Goode (R-of course he is-VA). Goode warned his constituents that the election of a Muslim to Congress (Rep. Keith Ellison) should be seen as a “wake up” call because there are “likely to be many more Muslims elected to office” if we don’t “adopt the strict immigration policies that I believe are necessary to preserve the values and beliefs traditional to the United States of America.”

Goode’s remarks are offensive beyond measure. Only citizens can hold office, and Muslim citizens have as much right to hold office as citizens of any other religion. Isn’t the Constitution, including its prohibition of religious tests, a part of our “traditional values”? Does Goode remember that he’s sworn an oath to uphold the Constitution?

Goode’s comments also reflect an appalling degree of ignorance. Our country’s first Muslim Congressman isn’t an immigrant; he was born in the USA and he traces his American ancestry to 1742. Do Goode’s own roots extend that far into the American past? Why does Goode think he’s more an American than Ellison?

And what do “strict immigration policies” have to do with any of this? Does Goode propose a religious test for immigration -- in effect establishing an official religion in defiance of the First Amendment? Does he believe that only Christians deserve citizenship?

Religious diversity is an American value; religious intolerance is not. Two years from now, Virginia voters should Just Say No to Virgil Goode.

So I guess that that all the enlightened people of the left here will immediately push through an constitutional amendment allowing immigrants to be president of the United States, effective immediately.

This week, per BlueNC (being crashed because it's the lead item on HuffPost), Mr. Hayes announced that the way to achieve peace and stability in Iraq is for 'Murcan soldiers to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ there - peace on earth, goodwill toward men.

    Yes, he really did.

And, please, no wisecracks from veterans about their old t-shirts which said "Peace through superior firepower".  OK?

he only won by a couple hundred votes, and his opponent got next-to-no money from DCCC, despite a lot of netroots support.

And, his opponent made his concession speech for 2006 and his announcement speech for 2008 at the same time.  We can only hope that the new people in charge at the DCCC are a little more helpful next time around.

You know how komodo dragons take down their prey? Their mouths are teeming with virulent and deadly bacteria. They follow prey till they have a chance to bite. Once.

They they just follow the prey till it collapses from the infections. And eat it, alive.

This way they avoid the fight that might hurt them.

Somewhat like rethugs feeding off the children they send to die in their wars..

When someone thinks that saying that Ellison isn't an immigrant is a counterargument to Goode's statement, it tends to cast a great deal of doubt on their other counterarguments. Goode is obviously refering to other Muslims immigrating to the U.S., and perhaps in the same fashion as said immigration to England and mainland Europe.

Jeebus. More Rorschach politics. Remember when every outlandish Bush quote was explained away by "Well, you see, he really meant to say something that not only makes perfect sense but coincidentally agrees with my pet issues"? It's baaaaaack!

You aren't serious about letting Goode off the hook for that obviously idiotic remark directed at the non-immigrant Ellison AND immigrants.

But I forget, the word immigrant (in particular, dark, swarthy ones) has always been a lightening rod for you.

Respectfully, I disagree, even with this taken in a rhetorical sense. We ought not to talk as if a demonstration of facts has persuasive value to such an ideological zealot. What's more, in presenting Goode with the Constitution we would at best be clarifying for him that which he wishes to overthrow.

virgil knows exactly what he's doing, and he really doesn't care what anyone outside his district thinks, they don't vote in his district.

i know this because i live in va, and am well familiar with both mr. goode and his constituents. my sister-in-law is one them. i have no idea who she voted for, and i'l not ask. that said, mr. goode is very representative of his district's population, no question about it.

as far as the constitution's concerned, most people wouldn't recognize it if it were flung in their faces, certainly not those in mr. goode's district.

btw TC, goode is an attorney, so presumably he took the basic constitutional law class, providing him a copy would be a waste of time.

Rep-elect Ellison will be swearing in on a Quoran.  But not just any old Quoran.  A very specific old Quoran that Thomas Jefferson owned back in the day.  Now that is a smart and classy move!
