Government to Rest in Geoff Fieger Trial

The Government is expected to rest its case against outspoken Michigan lawyer Geoffrey Feiger tomorrow. He's accused of violating campaign finance laws by reimbursing associates for donations to John Edwards and obstruction of justice. His lead counsel is Gerry Spence. (Background here.)

It looks like Fieger's biggest liability is his mouth. Today's headline: "Gym owner says Fieger called him an 'idiot' for speaking to FBI"

Southfield attorney Geoffrey Fieger raised his voice to the owner of his gym and called the man an idiot when he learned the man had spoken to FBI agents who were investigating him, Fieger's criminal trial in federal court was told Wednesday. Shant Gharibian, owner of Exclusive Fitness in West Bloomfield, testified Fieger told him "he must be some kind of idiot" to talk to the FBI. "He raised his voice and yelled at me," Gharibian said.

Only when you get to the end of the article do you learn:

But under cross-examination, Gharibian testified Fieger never told him to lie to the FBI and Fieger told him he believed the reimbursements were legal.

Good luck Geoff and Gerry.

At the most, maybe he should have said it more calmly and not yelled.

is a disgrace to the profession.  Quite irrespective of the merits of this criminal proceeding, he gives each and every one of us a bad name and has for a long time.

If I were still a MI resident by the time he ran for governor, I would have voted for frickin' John Engler over him.  And that's saying something.

OMG he raised his voice. (none / 0) (#4)

That's the evidence??????  Frankly anyone who speaks to the FBI without an attorney present probably is an idiot.

Wow, I could win for Geoffrey based on that.

Doesn't the justice department have anything (none / 0) (#5)

better to be doing than trackings down low level campaign finance crooks?  Shame Feiger for doing this, but on the other hand, its one of those things that is as common place as at offices as basketball pools and picking and choosing who to prosecute seems pretty selective.

Does the Bush Justice Department have anything better to do than try to take down high-profile trial lawyers who raise huge amounts of money for Democrats?

Gosh, I dunno.  You might as well ask whether the Bush IRS has anything better to do than review the 501(c)(3) status of black churches.

    Jeralyn!  Such a news flash!

I actually rather like Fieger, what I know of him, but no one would ever accuse him of excessively good manners, I don't think.

about Feiger?  He reimbursed his employees for their contributions with bonuses -- from which he deducted taxes.  He could have at least upped the bonus so everybody would get the full amount of the contribution back.  Cheap.

Been there and done that........ (none / 0) (#11)

I know exactly what it is like......

I've been there and had the feds after me for "political" things.  If things don't look up, he will need to get ready.   He needs to look at FedsGotMe.Com (Its a real website) for the info he needs on living in Federal Prison.   There are lots of white collar criminals there and I had the chance to spend time with some other lawyers too.
