Report: Body of Suicide Bomber Found at Manchester Arena

19 people are dead and at least 50 were injured when an explosion occurred at the end of an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester, UK. Police are treating it as a terrorist incident. Ariana had just finished her set and had just left the stage when the explosion occurred.

The Greater Manchester Police twitter feed with updates is here.

There are no clues yet as to who is responsible. While ISIS is an obvious possibility, it could also be al Qaida (Osama bin Laden's son Hamza bin Laden released an audio message this month calling for attacks in the west as did AQAP in Yemen. [More...]

The Department of Homeland Security has issued a press release, stating in part:

At this time, we have no information to indicate a specific credible threat involving music venues in the United States. However, the public may experience increased security in and around public places and events as officials take additional precautions.

The head of the Manchester Police would not say at the latest press conference if anyone has been arrested. But NBC News is reporting the body of a suicide bomber was found at the scene and has been tentatively identified:

From NBC:

Multiple senior U.S. law enforcement officials briefed by British authorities told NBC News that forensic evidence at the scene — including a body found at the blast site — indicated a suicide attack. British and U.S. law enforcement officials said they believed they had tentatively identified the bomber.

In the 9th issue of ISIS' recent Rumiyah 9, an English Magazine (no link, but I saved a copy when it came out) there was an article on terror tactics and hostage taking. It included this:

Ideal target locations for hostage-taking scenarios include night clubs, movie theaters, busy shopping malls and large stores, popular restaurants, concert halls, university campuses, public swimming pools, indoor ice skating rinks, and generally any busy enclosed area, as such an environment allows for one to take control of the situation by rounding up the kuffar present inside and allows one to massacre them while using the building as a natural defense against any responding force attempting to enter and bring the operation to a quick halt.

Similarly, characteristics of a good target location include low light conditions, as it grants one the ability to maneuver between the people, taking advantage of the confusion and killing as many of the kuffar as physically possible.

Al Qaida has plotted attacks at public places in Manchester before. From a DOJ press release in 2015 on the conviction and 40 year sentence of Abd Nassr.

The defendant and his accomplices came within days of executing a plot to conduct a bombing at a crowded shopping mall in Manchester, England, as directed by senior al-Qaeda leaders in Pakistan.

That particular planned attack, which also targeted the New York City subway system and a newspaper office in Copenhagen, had been directed by and coordinated with senior al-Qaeda leaders in Pakistan. Nassr is the eighth defendant to face charges in federal court related to the al-Qaeda plot, which also involved Adis Medunjanin, Najibullah Zazi and Zarein Ahmedzay, the three members of the cell that targeted New York City. Naseer was convicted in March 2015 after a three-week jury trial of providing material support to al-Qaeda, conspiring to provide material support to al-Qaeda and conspiring to use a destructive device in relation to a crime of violence.

I'm sending goodthoughts to the children, teens and their parents who have been hurt, traumatized and emotionally scarred by this event. I suspect by morning here, we'll know the attackers name and if he acted alone.

I've stated my opinion here many times over the past five years covering ISIS that the threats the West has to worry about are not from returning fighters, but homegrown fighters that never got a chance to go fight in Iraq or Syria. These are the ones Al Qaida and ISIS are trying to inspire -- telling them not to travel, and just act on their own in their home country. The result will be the same and they will still be rewarded as if they had died on a battlefield.

Again, as with so many mass murders, media are reporting the audience as children, kids, preteens . . . and are avoiding the most accurate word:

    Girls.

the word "girls" to cushion the blow.

Killing girls is too much like Newtown.  Just very awful, very painful to contemplate.

An essay points out that the terrorist attack targeted girls and women, fans of the artist, Ariana Grande, who is known for blissful, unsubdued feminine sexuality--threatening to the established heteropatriarchal order. But, definitely, targeting girls and young women.

... I believe that children are children and thus true innocents, regardless of their gender. They've yet to master the fine adult art of filing people into various demographic categories and rationalizing their prejudices, the way their elders so often do.

In my comment, I also noted that Ariana Grande's fan base is composed primarily of young girls. I didn't see any need to further speculate about the attacker's motive than I did, because I'm not so sure that whoever did this was necessarily targeting girls specifically, as much as he (or she) was seeking a soft, vulnerable and mostly undefended target, not unlike those terrorists who attacked that rock concert in Paris last year.

I mean, had the site of such an atrocity instead been a Little League game or a WWE event, would we have felt similarly compelled to speculate that the attacker was motivated to target boys?

Personally, I think much of the media shies away from gender identification in their stories because in the past, they've so often been accused -- and rightly so, in many instances -- of discussing and referencing women and girls in a patronizing, condescending and at times even disparaging manner. So, they tend to favor the use of gender-neutral terms.

    Anyway, that's my take. Aloha.

    unlike a lot of media.

As for the reasoning of the media and perhaps the bomber, I disagree.  ISIS is against girls (and women) having freedom, and especially freedom to enjoy public events.

And past examples show that media definitely would report an attack on a Little League game as targeting boys . . . even though girls play in Little League, Donald.  (And they have for a long time; my daughter, now 35, integrated our town's team a quarter of a century ago.)  However, we have plenty of studies that show that media shy away only from reporting that girls and women are the targets of, for example, most school and campus shootings.

Let me help here:  There is nothing patronizing about the term girl, unless it is used to describe women.  And there is everything wrong with reporting (please remember that I taught it for decades) that avoids the most specific terms.

if a heavy emphasis on the fact that it was girls would not, in a certain way, be playing on their field.  in other words doing what they want.  rather than just reporting is as an evil act against a soft target of mostly children.

i have no real position or opinion here.  i just wonder.
