O'Hanlon: It's The Dishonesty, Stupid

Michael O'Hanlon defends himself again and elides what to me is the fundamental problem with his recent analysis - his dishonest depiction of himself as an Iraq War and Surge critic. He was a strong supporter of both the war and the Surge. O'Hanlon writes:

How can one gather and assess information about Iraq -- collected on a trip or from any other source? Information from a war zone is difficult to attain and interpretation is open to many views. Unfortunately, much of the blogosphere and other media outlets have emphasized the wrong question, challenging the integrity of anyone who dares to express politically incorrect views about Iraq. Last week, Jonathan Finer criticized [O'Hanlon and Pollack] on this page and he ignored how critical Pollack and I have been of administration policy in the past. . . .

(Emphasis supplied.) That is nonsense. O'Hanlon dishonestly continues to portray himself as a critic of the war and the Surge.

He is lying. That is the fundamental problem with his work in my view. Others have taken apart his analysis. I stand by my position that his willingness to lie about his strong support for the war and the Surge disqualifies his analysis from serious consideration. Others can take apart his analysis. I stand by my view that his fundamental dishonesty make his observations not worthy of consideration.

O'Hallan as did McCain criticized the way the war was prosecuted. May be he was very critical. Today he confuses criticism of the tactics with criticism of the strategy and the motivation. O'Hallan sees only himself and nothing else.

More interesting is his argument. How can one gather and assess information about Iraq -- collected on a trip or from any other source? Information from a war zone is difficult to attain and interpretation is open to many views. In other words, look guys I actually have no information, so I decided that there progress!

Beautiful argumentation for a reputed think tank member. Why doesn't O'Hallan just write a gossip column?

in forums like this, but I don't think many people are listening to you on this one. While I look at this forum only periodically, I haven't noticed you or anyone making much, if any, effort to show how the substance of O'Hanlon's assessment was not correct. I realize you want to dismiss OH's report because of the supposed lie and methodology, but that does nothing for people like me who would prefer to hear why OH's assessment is incorrect, and what the basis for that type of analysis would be.

Yglesias, Drum and many others have made it clear that O'Hanlon is full of crap on the substance.

But you will not want to be convinced of that so I will not waste your time.

Putting the lipstick on the pig is the easy part....you have to lie awfully hard to convince sane people that the lipstick makes the pig pretty.

All they have to make Iraq look pretty is lies, because it just plain....isn't

It's a secret! We want to make a big splash.

We are shooting for the fourth but there are a lot of factors that could stretch it out up to a week...another reason to keep it (sorta) quiet.

    It's gonna be fun though!
