Crime and Injustice vs. Political Coverage

I've received a few e-mails asking me when the blog is going to resume coverage of crime and injustice issues. A typical complaint:

There are civil liberties violations, judicial
decisions, the conviction and death of the
innocent...Isn't that worth a little discussion?

Here's the response I just sent to the sender of the most recent one.

In the past two days, I've written posts about the sixth anniversary of Guantanamo detentions and the ACLU's "close Guantanamo" campaign, yesterday's federal court decision throwing out four detainees' lawsuits against Rumsfeld and other military officials, Marion Jones being sentenced to 6 months for lying about steroid use, O.J. Simpson's arrest and jailing pending a bail revocation hearing, a federal judge's decision to stop a planned deportation to Egypt because of possible torture there, delays in implementing the Real ID Act, a PA exonerated death row inmate who will receive $4 million compensation, and the Supreme Court oral arguments in the Voter ID law case.

I don't think I've ever left the topics of crime and injustice. There's just additional coverage of the primaries now, because it's primary season.

Suggestion: If you think the coverage is all political, just scroll down the front page of 15 posts and if you want more, click on the link to the previous 15 posts. You'll see it is not. We just write a lot here.

I would think that the two things are pretty closely intertwined.  One (politics) clearly has an impact on the other.

"I was once politely informed by our hostess that if I didn't care for the liberal coverage of criminal defense, perhaps I should choose a different blog."

IMHO, the hostess not only has the right to that stance, but is correct in holding it.  I have no patience for people who want JEM to change HER blog because you may not be happy with the content.  Go read something else or start your own blog.  It is still a relatively free country.

I have complained, I think it is just because, this is one of the only places to get crime and injustice news.  Jeralyn you are all we have, so we get possessive over what this blog covers.

Your commenting does not remotely reflect this complaint. I would guess that .05% of your comments are about crime and injustice and the other 99.95% are about campaign politics.

Ignore it at your peril, although as long as your numbers are good maybe you don't care.

    But traffic is good?

What are you saying? Are you suggesting that the few complainers have a grip and the rest of us do not?

hostess that if I didn't care for the liberal coverage of criminal defense, perhaps I should choose a different blog.  I am here to read BTD.  Why don't the people who are here for criminal justice coverage just read that part of the blog?

and her blog and she can do as she wants to. No doubt.

I think that the negative responses you see from some are the same thing you see from fans loyal to, and supporters of, sports teams when they believe management is doing something that hurts the "team."

As someone who has been around since 2003 the blog has changed. And yes, I think the focus has moved towards politics and away from crime/social issues and the WOT. That's not surprising given the fact that it is an election cycle and the attention paid by the Demos to the blogs in general.

But I don't see this as good, or bad. It merely "is."
