Golden Globes: Winners and Presenters

For those of you on the east coast, the show has begun. Here's a thread for the results. (Spoiler alert to those in other time zones- stay away from the comments unless you want to know who won.)

Our red carpet thread is here.

Updates below:

Update: 7:05pm MT: First award: Kate Winslett, best supporting actress for Revolutionary Road. She's so elegant.

Here's Sting, he doesn't look as sexy with brown hair. He's introducing the best original songs. I hope Miley Cirus doesn't win for that syrupy number. Here's Bruce's song from the Wrestler. The Boss wins! He and Patti look terrific.

Update: Best actress in a dramatic tv series...Anna Pacquin, True Blood. I've never seen it, she's the little girl in The Piano, all grown up. She looks great. I wonder if Sally Field had won whether she would have said, "You still like me!"

Update: Sally Hawkins wins...she was so shocked she didn't think to kiss Johnny Depp. I never would have let that chance go by.

Update: I really didn't like John Adams. Some of the other movies in that category seemed good.

Demi Moore looks really pretty. I like her dress too. Heath Ledger wins, of course, for the Dark Knight.

Update: Yes to Slumdog Millionaire for best screenplay. I can't wait to see it.

Best tv actor in a comedy: Alec Baldwin, 30 Rock. Best actress in a comedy: Tina Fey, 30 Rock.

Update: Yea! Best Director goes to Danny Boyle, for Slumdog Millionaire. Yes, I know I haven't seen it but it's the underdog and the audience there is cheering it. And I love Indian movies and am a real sucker for Bollywood.

Ok, everyone can finish watching and commenting here, I'm going to revert to tivo to watch 24 and Brothers and Sisters. Also, the first episode of Damages is re-airing tonight on FX -- on Demand has it if you missed it. It's very intense, particularly William Hurt. So much tv, so little time. Is it just me, or has politics become so unfulfilling lately it's more fun to watch tv?

It's a Mike Leigh film, so it's not a usual Hollwood style formula.  It's much more upbeat than many of Leigh's films, but that tone suits the movie just fine.  Excellent work by the cast, especially Sally Hawkins.

Mmm, where to I start--I was glad Ana Paquin won b/c I love True Blood, but her speech was just so not personal.

I really like what the Israeli said at the end of his speech.  Laura Linley was great--as always.

I don't have anything against her except in that part in The Closer. That fake accent drives me up the wall, and I think she just hams it up.

And yes, Piven does not need another award for the same role he's had for 6 years.

It's not on a par with Six Feet Under, but Alan Ball said this is popcorn viewing for intelligent people (or something like that).

and Parker's range, if you've been watching her for years, is just wonderful.  In Weeds, the aging (but not maturing:-) Valley girl is terrific -- and the test for me is often whether a show could do without the one actor.  She holds it together while also allowing all those around her to inhabit such an incredible mix of crazies.  Or Californians.  I gather that's one and the same thing. . . .

by ruffian on Sun Jan 11, 2009 at 09:12:07 PM EST
It is a period piece...small English town, a little post Jane Austen period.  It's based on the novels of Elizabeth Gaskell, who wrote in the 1830s or so.  She went into the details of village life a lot more than Austen did, but with the same emphasis on women's lives. I don't know if you like the old-timie English type of story, but the series was sooo good.  Judy Dench plays a shy elderly lady who had a secret love in her youth...

    A word for John Adams: (none / 0) (#36)
by Cream City on Sun Jan 11, 2009 at 09:19:29 PM EST
Wonderful.  Times ten, times a hundred.

I'm planning to watch (got the DVD as a gift) the incredible episode of the first inauguration this January 20.

Maybe I loved it because I already had read the best bios of Abigail, John, etc. -- but it has excited many people I know of all ages to start reading American history, and there ought to be an awards for that, too.  Our country can only benefit by having Americans actually begin to question and learn from our past.

    Parent

I did like John Adams too (none / 0) (#37)

It was jarring at first for me (none / 0) (#44)
by Cream City on Sun Jan 11, 2009 at 09:44:37 PM EST
as was anyone but DaSilva as Franklin -- I'm still a fan of the marvelous musical 1776 for its entertainment value but also its educational value in depiction of the slavery debate . . . and, in general, the very human endeavor that was the American Revolution.  And thus the still very human and flawed endeavor that is the country, except when we remember to reach as the founders did.

And Linney was especially jarring for me, having read the Abby bios, seen the portraits, etc. -- although well I know that few others in the viewing audience had much of an idea about her at all.

But over time, the reaching inherent in the  endeavor that was this series, the reaching of the actors and their grasp of the roles, won me.  I guess it either did or it didn't, and there 'tis.
