Thursday Afternoon Open Thread

Bill Simmons has a very funny column on the upcoming NFL season. If you like the NFL and Bill Simmons, you should read it.

The Florida Gators face their first "test" of the season on Saturday after being 73 point favorites in the first game (they did not cover, only winning by 59), facing Troy. They are only 36 point favorites this week. If this trend continues, Florida will only be favored by 18 over Tennessee in week 3. I think that's low - Florida probably will be a 25 point favorite over Tennessee. More on college football Saturday morning, where I'll start making picks this year (my goal is to become the new Greg Easterbrook, a guy who once wrote BS about politics and now writes BS about football.)

This is an Open Thread.

I just don't fear germs...I think its good to come in contact with them.

And lest I give the impression I'm some filthy animal, when my hands are visibly dirty I do wash them, if they are not visibly dirty I don't.  I might wash 'em an average of once a day outside of my morning shower.  Never used a "hand sanitizer" in my life.

It is officially written and well documented that if you pick something off the floor within five seconds you may eat it. After that - it is forbidden to do so.

for organic compounds, which "bong resins" are.

    More household chemicals:
We bought a little 15 ft Intex swimming pool with the blowup ring....we've having a blast with it....but my point is, you can pay a fortune for pool chemicals, or you can use bleach crystals (that are made for pools) along with baking soda and 20 mule team borax for modifying the alkalinity, and muramic acid if you go too far with the alkaline.

I'm told you can also use liquid chlorine bleach in the pool, but you'd need a jug of it to match a half cup of the crystals, so I use the crystals. Saves me from having chlorine jugs to throw away.

I considered myself brilliant for finding all this out. I do have something of a chemistry background, so it wasn't THAT huge of a stretch.

Oh, more chemicals:  Vinegar is the best weed killer and stainless steel sparkler ever.  Of course it has many other uses.

And baking soda is great for cleaning the oven....

Although people have a tendency to think if vinegar and baking soda are good, they're great together....a mistake and I think you of all people know why.

I use it for cleaning cat boxes, mopping floors, general cleaning. If I've been juicing citrus, I throw the rinds in a large jar and fill with vinegar. Wait a few days for the oils to release and then use that around the kitchen and bathroom.

And it's safe around my pets. Ever get a pet (especially a feline) to wait before they walk on the floor while you're mopping? And one feline likes to get right in there whenever I'm cleaning for an up close and personal view of my activity . . .

I like the NFL.  But reading sportswriters (this column included) is normally an off-putting experience for me.  Same as reading Men's Journal.  There are way too many stereotypes about women and offhanded comments about women that rankle me.  And yes, I know Cosmo and what not are just as inane about the opposite gender.  It's a dumb industry if you ask me.

Reading gender targeted anything is often a cringe worthy experience - from fashion mavens to sports writers.  Cosmo has the most recognizable cover evah - just look for the cleavage.  (Isn't that a guy thing?)  The corniest covers have to belong to the fitness mags that feature huge overbronzed muscled men and always smaller, paler busty women.

I was watching the US Open yesterday.
The match between Oudin and Wozniacki.

I just wanted to see a tennis match.
The channel broadcasting it kept wanting to spin it into an American thing since Oudin is American. The idiot who interviewed Wozniacki, who is from Denmark, before the game asked her how she thought she would feel since all the people who "be against her". God - what tact.
Amazingly, she answered that the crowd would be rooting for Melanie - not against her. And that she would find inspiration in the energy of the crowd.

The crowd was in fact very well behaved. You could feel them rooting for Oudin, but they were respectful and appreciative of Wozniacki.

But these commentators were nonstop in their jingoism.
    It wasn't fair to Oudin.

I had to turn the sound off - which I don't like to do because I like to hear the sound of the ball being struck - but the incessant agenda-laden yammering of the commentators left me no choice.

there is a good front pager on Lindsey Graham; Concern Troll.

it contains this great Kristol quote about Clintons health care reform efforts:

[T]he long-term political effects of a successful Clinton health care bill will be even worse--much worse. It will relegitimize middle-class dependence for "security" on government spending and regulation. It will revive the reputation of the party that spends and regulates, the Democrats, as the generous protector of middle-class interests. And it will at the same time strike a punishing blow against Republican claims to defend the middle class by restraining government.

I thought one of the best moments last night was when Obama said something, I cant remember what, and Huckleberry was about to clap when he noticed the camera on him and sat on his hands.

...Division II team, perennial D II play-off team and in-state rival UNI was a pretty good first game test for the Hawks.  And, you couldn't have asked for a more exciting game.

This week is game to sweat.  Can't be losing to the Cyclones, even if it is on the road in oh-so-lovely Ames, Iowa.

But I really like Easterbrook...never miss a TMQ column.  Love the political content mixed in with football analysis.

That will tell us if Barkley really can be the QB this season for the Trojans.

No.4 vs. No. 6, a tough fight even if Sanchez was still QB. Barkley will face a big test on Saturday.

I dont know. I'm not familiar enough with NY state politics to know what's going on with the Gov race other than Patterson is probably going to lose if he makes it to the general.

With a big lead in cash the primary polling against Paterson, there's no need to announce.

He's just pissing off the other potentially viable Democrats (any Democrat but Paterson probably wins in a walk).
