Super Bowl 44: Saints Win

Manning throws a late pick to seal Saints win. Final score Saints 31 - Colts 17.

More . . .

My misguided pre game analysis:

From Sport Left:

The Colts play the Saints today in Super Bowl XLIV. (Don't you hate the roman numerals schtick now?) The colts are the better team. But the Vikings were the better team in the NFC Championship game. The best team does not always win.

The line is Colts (+5 1/2). Looking at the game on the merits, the Colts seem the play. One objective point favors the Saints - Dwight Freeney's ankle. Based on the descriptions of the injury, it seems hard to imagine Freeney can play much, or effectively. Yet, I do not see that as a huge factor. Pressuring Drew Brees is a sketchy proposition anyway. The Vikings did not get much pressure on Brees, yet they shut down the Saints offense. To beat the Colts requires a team capable of physically dominating them. Is the Saints' running game up to it? I doubt it. the other key to the Saints' success this year has been turnovers. Their defense has been excellent at creating turnovers (some of it is random, but the Saints try and strip on every play. It is more than just random.)

On defense, the question for the Saints is how to stop Peyton Manning. Pressure is the conventional prescription, but it has not worked much in the past 4 years. Manning is clearly the best player in the NFL. He is at the top of his game. All of his receivers are healthy. The Saints defense is really not very good against the pass (or the run for that matter.) I do not see them stopping the Colts. I like the Colts, big. Take the Colts (-5 1/2).

On the prop bets, here is what I am playing:

Heads on the coin toss, Colts receive opening kick off, Saints get first first down, first first down comes on a running play, Saints score first, team that scores first loses the game, first score will be a field goal, first scoring play will be a Saints field goal, Colts will score the first TD, Colts will be the team to punt first, first call subject to coaches challenge will be upheld, first turnover will be a fumble, Saints will be the last team to score, last score will be a TD, a 4th down attempt will be converted, and finally, both teams will have the lead in the first half.

The full list of prop bets here.

...to root for the Colts, what with the head coach and offensive coordinator having Hawkeye roots and 2 ex-Hawks on the roster.

However, the emotional scars of having my childhood team stolen away from me in the middle of night makes it impossible.  While I've forgiven John Elway for his betrayal (unlike my East Coast residing relatives), some things just can't be forgiven or forgotten.

I'll be pulling for the Who Dat's today.

but that was an excellent version of "Won't Get Fooled Again."  Fun to watch young Mr. Starkey on drums. And Pete can still hit the strings just like he wants to with that "windmill."  (Too bad he didn't smash his guitar at the end.)  Anyone else notice that they played all the numbers just a little slower than the originals, presumably for the outdoor arena's acoustics?

and I really enjoyed that music -- still do.  Also love rock, Bach and Mozart, trad folk, klezmer, Dylan, salsa, zydeco, bebop, and lots more.  Pretty diverse tastes.  One of the most wonderful things I ever saw was a University marching band version of Phil Ochs' "The Power and the Glory." (As Phil sings it on that clip, you can hear what a great march it could be.)  Not sure if it was during a Super Bowl or an Orange Bowl, or what school's band it was, but it was over 15 years ago.

Vikings fan, I have to disagree that they "shut down the Saints offense" - yes, the Saints got points (and arguably the victory) because the Vikings imploded (turnovers, 12 men in the huddle, etc) but it takes a good offense to make an otherwise-stable team do that. As you said, not random.

Have to agree, though, there's no way the Saints match up well against the Colts on any front. Yes, that was true against the Vikings, but they're not playing in the Superdome and the Colts won't turn it over five times. Even Dwight Freeney's injury may have a silver lining in that it will make the Colts D more unpredictable and possibly pressure their secondary and D-line into making some surprising plays that the Saints didn't plan for.

Gonna be a good one. Will there be a TalkLeft/SportLeft live blog?

by brodie on Sun Feb 07, 2010 at 01:40:25 PM EST
sounded about right about a week ago, but then Coach Tony Dungy had to step in and give the Saints some extra motivation when he predicted a few days ago that Manning wouldn't need a late comeback drive because the Colts would be winning big.

Last time he did this earlier this season, the other team took the remarks to heart and pulled off an upset.

So, it looks like the Colts won't win big today.  And may need a last-minute Manning drive to pull out a victory.

Me, I just hope for a close and high-scoring game, worthy of this lengthy 2-week buildup.

Chez Brodie there's a slight rooting interest, barely, for the Saints.  LB Scott Fujita's outspoken liberalism, plus colorful Cajun James Carville being a Saints fan, and Peyton Manning being an overexposed corporate Repub.

Though I'm not unaware that, somehow, Colts' owner Jim Irsay is friends with CSN&Y liberal Steven Stills and was the first owner to nix Rushbaugh's attempt at NFL ownership.

if the vikings were the better team, in the nfc championship game, we'd be getting ready to watch the colts-vikings, in super bowl LCCIIIVVVV, or whatever.

clearly, such is not the case.

that said, i have a problem here. there is no obvious "good guys-bad guys" scenario, it wouldn't kill me if either wins. i do have a local rooting interest however, the starting left offensive tackle for the saints is a local boy. that, and i'm all for anything good that happens to new orleans right now.

close game, field goal decides it in the last minute of play: 30-27 saints.

Still, it seemed like there's nothing left in the tank but tired stage gimmicks.  Got to wonder what Pete thinks when they sing "hope I die before I get old" now.

and I've been a fan of the Who since my childhood as they began to be heard in the US.

It's just that like with athletes, musical artists have their time, their prime and a little beyond touring on the senior circuit, where they hit the notes and the right chords and can do so seamlessly.  When they begin to strain and struggle to deliver the goods, as I sensed with last night's performance, it's probably time to hang 'em up and begin writing the memoirs.

And, yes, count me as another 60s rock fan who has always called that song "Teenage Wasteland."  A great deal of outstanding music from that period -- the best decade in popular music history -- and it's not easy, even for those of us lucky enough to have lived through it in real time, to keep precise track of all the various details of the many artists and the hundreds of worthy song titles.

Colts marched right down the field on the next possession, so I do not think it was the turning point.

I think the stop in the 4th when the Colts tried the 51 yard FG was the turning point.

Of course, the INT was the turning point too.

I wish I would have bet turnover on that play - 25-1 on that play.

half was ending, the onside kick to start the second half was a ballsy call; said, "um, no - we're not ready to hand over the game to you, Manning."

Caldwell's call to put Matt Stover on to kick the 51-yarder was bad, bad, bad; there was no way Stover's leg was going to put that one through the uprights - if it was, the Ravens would have signed him for another year, duh.

Too bad for Manning that the "choke artist" label will come back again after that interception; then again, not too bad.  That was one sweet moment - he'll be playing that one over and over again until July...

For someone some considered the greatest QB of all time?   Against a quality but far from great NO defense?

Can we say that Peyton Manning is perhaps a tad overrated?

    I will.

And that pick he threw, which was nearly just tossed out there casually rather than zipped towards the receiver, was an example of PM and his coaches not realizing the offensive scheme -- dinking and dunking all the way down the field with the occasional run -- was becoming by the 4th qtr all too predictable.

Joe Montana of the Niners:  still the true Greatest QB of All Time.  Tom Brady is in the top 5 easily.  Peyton is somewhere in the top 10.

leading a receiver in order to hit them perfectly in full stride than anyone I ever saw. And having Jerry Rice didnt exactly hurt either.

People love to talk about some current guy being "the greatest of all time". Whether it's Peyton or Kobe or whoever..nothing brings out the hyperbole like sports media people at a loss for interesting things to talk about.
