Estate of George Harrison Complains About RNC Unauthorized Use of Music

Via the Associated Press:

[George] Harrison's family tweeted Friday that the use of the song "Here Comes the Sun" during the introduction of candidate Donald Trump's daughter Ivanka was not authorized, and was "offensive and against the wishes of the George Harrison estate."

During one segment of RNC analysis I heard on the car radio, I thought I heard Sirius in the background. But since I was listening to the news on Sirius, I couldn't tell if it was a commercial for a Sirius music station, or if a Sirius music station was being played in the convention hall.

I know nothing about radio station licensing, but I wonder, why doesn't Donald Trump just buy a Sirius radio station? He could call it Trump Radio. His campaign could choose what songs to play on his station at any given time, and for spontaneous or live events, text the D.J. at the appropriate moment. The song would then broadcast while playing on that public station through the arena's speakers. As long as Trump paid whatever fee Sirius charges for publicly airing a Sirius station and Trump Radio in turn paid the royalty fees to the artists they play, the artists might have less ability to protest.

Or maybe not. Here's some links and quotes on the topic of campaigns licensing songs when the artist objects.

widow has requested the campaign cease playing his recording of Puccini's "Nessun dorma" aria from Turandot. Who new e convention planners were opera lovers. Scary.

They should have provided a "trigger warning" and a "safe space" before unleashing such incredible darkness.

    Everywhere there's lots of piggies

You can see them out for dinner
    With their piggy wives
Clutching forks and knives to eat their bacon

...if they have "already secured exclusive rights" to the use of copyright material, that would be a moral statement that the GOP can't make.

The GOP just uses the stuff, and after the violation apologizes, instead of sending a check or even asking the artist in the first place.

The problem for the GOP is that creative people, a subset of which includes musicians, are overwhelmingly liberal.

Go figure.  It's just one of those facts that can't be denied.  "Those people" vote Democratic, while composing and singing their vile, catchy anti-establishment teenage pap that you can hum forty years after you first heard it.

Left to using their own artists for material, the GOP would be limited to "Cat Scratch Fever."

A DJ said that these public events always pay a fee to play music at these events , ASCAP licensing for business.  Per ASCAP

ASCAP gives you a license to entertain your customers, guests and employees with the world's largest musical repertory. One of the greatest advantages of the ASCAP license is that it gives you the right to perform ANY or ALL of the millions of the musical works in our repertory. Whether your music is live, broadcast, transmitted or played via CD's or videos, your ASCAP license covers your performances. And with one license fee, ASCAP saves you the time, expense, and burden of contacting thousands of copyright owners.

To me, it sounds like the artists are complaining about when their song is played, like when Ivanka is stepping out on the stage to deliver a speech.
It sounds like the artists "request" that political campaigns not play their music, if they do not want to be associated with it, but I believe most campaigns pay the required licensing fees
