Joe Biden: Your Father's Oldsmobile is Honking at Us

Joe Biden has a new gimmick -- he may not only decide to run but he is considering Stacy Abrams as a VP candidate.

Memo to Dems: Stop funding Joe. He is not Obama. He's a crime warrior, especially on drugs. He's got a lousy record on criminal justice issues and has stuck us with some of the worst bills of the last generation. He once bragged in Congress he was tougher than George Bush I on crime. He is a police fan-boy. He's a one-man crime band.

Joe Biden is the self-admitted architect of the worst crime bills in history.

The 1994 crime bill provided tens of billions of dollars to put thousands of additional police on the streets, build new prisons, increase border protection, and fund crime prevention programs. It included several measures — including the Violence Against Women Act and a federal ban on certain assault weapons — that remain popular among many Democrats.

But it also eliminated Pell Grants for prison inmates, criminalized gang membership, contained $9.7 billion in funding for new prisons, established a three-strikes provision that mandated life sentences for people with two or more prior convictions found to have committed a violent felony, and gave states incentives to lengthen sentences.

He also drafted or co-sponsored legislation "that created the federal 'drug czar' and mandatory minimum sentencing for marijuana and the sentencing disparity for crack and powder cocaine." Even in 2014, he opposed legalization of marijuana.

We cannot forgive or forget Joe Biden's record on crime in the 1990's. Here's a Biden quote to Congress in 1995 when pushing for habeas limits, bragging about "the Biden bill" and how it authorized the death penalty that can be used for the Oklahoma City Bomber:

My colleagues on the Republican side of the aisle have repeatedly said in this bill that we must do something to ensure swift punishment of those who committed the Oklahoma City bombing. That is supposedly why, you might wonder, in a terrorism bill there is habeas corpus.

Well, the constant argument put forward is, look, we have to do this because once we find the person who did this awful thing in Oklahoma and they are convicted and sentenced to death, the death penalty must be carried out swiftly. I might add, a bill that the Presiding Officer and I voted for, the Biden crime bill, is the only reason there is a death penalty. Had we not voted for that bill, had that not passed last year, this finding of a person who committed the bombing, that person under Federal law would not be eligible to be put to death. There is no question that because of the action you and I and others took last year there is a death penalty now. So unlike the World Trade Tower, no death penalty would be there under Federal law had we not passed the Biden crime bill then.

The only crime bill we need now is a three strikes law that keeps Joe Biden from running for President for the third time.

Democrats can do so much better.

Memo to Biden: You are almost 80 years old. It's time to write your memoirs, not run for President. Let the Dems unify around a progressive candidate with a chance of winning. Look in the mirror. That person is not you.

Among Joe Biden's Greatest Hits (videos)

Joe Biden in 1993: Lock up all the predators

Another habit he has that makes me turn off the TV when he's on: he inserts his mother in every speech. Enough already. Talk about all of us, the American people. I could go on and on, and if he's in the primary race I will.

Bottom line: I'm not voting for an 80 year old to be President. It makes the likelihood we end up with a Veep for President much greater, and it is voting for a one term candidate, which will give the Republicans a leg up in 2024.

He must know this.  That thing with Abrams was just pathetic.  Like admitting he can't be taken seriously on his own.

I know everybody says it's happening.  I still think he may reconsider losing again and decide to spend more time with his family.

he would quit jacking around and just either announce he is running or not running. This is the same thing he did in 2016 until Obama yanked him by his ear and made him say in the Rose Garden that he was not running for president. It's like he wants us to beg him to run. At this point I think he might have waited too long since there are so many declared candidates already. And enough with the stunts of naming Stacey Abrams VP or running for only one term.

in addition to what's already been cited he was a strong supporter of the Iraq war, he consistently supported banks over consumers, he plagiarized a British politician's biography in a speech, he often invades the personal space of women and girls he's meeting for the first time which is very creepy, and his public speaking skills are atrocious.  He struggles to deliver a speech without making 1 or 2 idiotic gaffes.  He needs to stay retired.

I was kind of surprised that there did not seem to be the excitement surrounding Kamala that I thought there would be for her here in GA. I heard some people commenting and they seemed to be like me--just going for the curiosity factor and were undecided on a candidate.

Most, or at least a lot, of them think that they have the answer.  Some of them, it's true, run for (more or less) altruistic reasons.  But after awhile, even those with the best of intentions initially begin to believe that they are the ones who deserve to win.

Come on Joe, say it ain't so:
Caitlyn Caruso, a former college student and sexual assault survivor, said Mr. Biden rested his hand on her thigh -- even as she squirmed in her seat to show her discomfort -- and hugged her "just a little bit too long" at an event on sexual assault at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas. She was 19.

Ms. Caruso, now 22, said she chalked up the encounter at the time to how men act, and did not say anything publicly. But she said it was particularly uncomfortable because she had just shared her own story of sexual assault and had expected Mr. Biden -- an architect of the 1994 Violence Against Women Act -- to understand the importance of physical boundaries.

One has to think that Joe is probably pretty glad he didn't announce that he is running.  I don't know how he digs himself outta this one; I don't know that he should even try.

When Trump starts making fun of you in regards to your treatment of women it's probably time to call it a day.

In hospitality I'll say there are a lot of old men who don't understand or no longer care about personal boundaries with young women.    Generally speaking we tend to give some leeway (within reason) because they are old, and no longer relevant, or even losing their faculties and generally don't have the kind of power that they are used to, so they get "humored" within reason.

I can live with that as a social contract,  within reason of course.  I don't think that person should be president.

His handsy touchy feely behavior around women and girls is inexcusable and unacceptable. I didn't care for the lame excuse that his allies were pushing that he did not have impure thoughts when he touched these women.  If living in this world for 76 years is not long enough for Biden to have learned the basic rules of social etiquette between men and women then he's simply too dumb to be President.

And as Jeralyn said, he's obviously too old to be President.

support for Biden's response to his being overly physical saying it was what we should be looking for in our elected leaders.

"We cannot have perfection as a litmus test.  The responsibility of leaders is not to be perfect but to be accountable, to say: I've made a mistake.  I understand it and here is what I'm going to do about it as I move forward.  And, I think Joe Biden is doing that."

Stacey makes a good point, but the particular imperfection needs to fit the accountability acknowledgement.

And, while the relevance or severity of the imperfection cannot be assessed on the basis of what Trump et al can attack, since perfection, itself, is not immune from the most imperfect orange, it loom large when of almost universal agreement.

Biden's unannounced tactile proclivities, primary directed toward women, although not in the category of sexual assault or harassment, apparently, likely has never been welcome, just tolerated.

While Joe Biden would not be my favorite candidate, if he becomes one, but, in fairness, I believe we need to look at his entire and long career and assess its pros and cons.  Including this retail politicking relic.

I would vote for Biden, too, if it came to that.  He was a heart beat away from president for eight years, so we could deal with him as actual president if necessary.   His long record certainly is spotty, the most significant, positive issue that comes to me is his influence on Obama in evolving to support same sex marriage.

But forgive me for suspecting it was a reading of the political climate.

Which is why I think he won't run.  He is an astute reader of political climate.    If he does maybe I will give him more credit for that particular choice.

forget the bankruptcy bill, Warren will flame him over it, they have sparred before
On a February morning in 2005 in a hearing room in the Dirksen Senate Office Building, Joe Biden confronted Elizabeth Warren over a subject they'd been feuding over for years: the country's bankruptcy laws. Biden, then a senator from Delaware, was one of the strongest backers of a bill meant to address the skyrocketing rate at which Americans were filing for bankruptcy. Warren, at the time a Harvard law professor, had been fighting to kill the same legislation for seven years. She had castigated Biden, accusing him of trying "to sell out women" by pushing for earlier versions of the bill. Now, with the legislation nearing a vote, Biden publicly grappled with Warren face to face.
many people think that was the launch of her political career.

Who the heck is Biden's base anyway?

    Biden was against bussing.

Also,  as someone who was personally bussed in a racially segregated city I could talk about this subject for a long time, including the fact that it was, IMO,  largely unsuccessful at integrating the school system here and we are now looking at alternatives to bussing.

Thst said, I absolutely do not trust the racial views of people who opposed bussing before it was implemented. That might be due to local bias, but it is what it is.

"Bussing" means kissing (with an implication of quickly or casually, and not necessarily on the lips), while "busing" means "transporting by bus."  In Biden's case, he was against the wrong kind. Perhaps it was just a spelling error.

Also this is one of those words I actually have to write a decent amount and pretty much always get it wrong (usually the plural form buses or busses).  I am also notorious in my family for being a terrible speller.

On the upside I chose a career path where the people who read what I write are almost all worse at spelling than me.

What a total apologist for white middle class racism and privilege. His aim, seemingly, was to make white people feel not just justified, but good in their racism.

And his votes and stances on abortion are quite concerning.

Also, all people facing crushing student loan debt and wondering why Trump could file bankruptcy six times, but they cannot discharge student loan debt through bankruptcy need look no further than Joe Biden, champion of credit card companies and banks.

His record is abysmal even if one adjusts for the times (1970s-present day).

Joe really benefits from the Obama halo and the horribleness of Trump.

Former Democratic Vice President Joe Biden said Sunday he promised his dying son Beau he would not retreat from life after his son's death
Biden made the comments during an appearance in Vermont that is part of his ongoing tour promoting his book, "Promise Me, Dad: A Year of Hope, Hardship, and Purpose," which he wrote after Beau Biden's 2015 death from cancer.
Last week during an appearance in Montana, Biden said he felt he was the most qualified person in the country to be president.
