Thursday Open Thread

Sometimes it's good just to sleep, read and think about other things rather than dwell on all that's going down the drain under the present toxic administration.

ISIS Leader al Baghadadi has stepped out for the first time in five years. He's gotten a makeover -- instead of looking like a religious figure, he now looks like a military commander. His message appears designed to let us all know he's alive and although conceding ISIS has lost its physical territory (and the state it was creating as a Caliphate), and they got badly trounced at their last battle in Baghdouz, ISIS is regrouping as a global insurgency right now (no need to conquer big swaths of land and instill governing forces like before). He praised the Sri Lanka bombings and mentioned factions in Mali and Africa that had recently aligned with ISIS. He also mentioned new groups joining with them in Khorassan. Probably his most telling line was that Allah commanded them to make jihad, but did not command they acheive victory. In other words, he's telling his supporters to be prepared to die, as they will fight until the resurrection. [More...]

The video was highly stylized in the sense that there were plastic covered reports with brightly colored tabs for each region in which ISIS still had forces, and his aides handed them to him one by one to review. This was to convey that he is up to speed on what's happening in each region. There was also a report for Turkey, which until now, had not been named as a Wilayat. There was also a report for Tunisia, although it hasn't reached the level of a Wilayat yet. And instead of thinking of a Wilayat as a state, it should now just be considered a region in which ISIS is active. It's not governing territory now, it's regrouping.

Watching the speech in HD, I thought Baghdadi looked pretty hearty (put on some weight, had color in his face, was relaxed, earnest, looked his three aides (whose faces were blurred out) in the eye as he spoke, didn't ramble, etc.) This was not someone who appeared to have gotten off his death bed to speak. He had a big firearm by his side, so again, this was a speech designed to show he's still in the fight, and not as a preacher. He was humble, and even mentioned some Western fighters and media team members who had died.

One was an Australian national with the moniker Abu Abdallah al-Australi who according to some reports, recently ran the central media department until he was killed in an airstrike in December, 2018, maybe in Hajin. The other, Abu Yasir (also spelled Yasser) al Baljiki (also spelled al Beljiki)meaning from Belgium, I could find no earlier reference to. I spent far too many hours looking and will now just wait until someone else identifies him.

In other news, the Government filed a 99 page response to El Chapo's motion for new trial based on jurors disregarding the court's instructions not to read about or discuss the case prior to the start of deliberations. There was nothing I found worth quoting in it.

This is an open thread, all topics welcome.

Harris' pointed questioning of Barr. Her questions are strictly "yes" or "no." She does not permit filibusters, cut him off when he tried. "I'm asking a question."

She asked him whether he had talked to anyone in the White House about the pending cases. He had her ask the simple question again, obviously playing for time. He wondered who she meant by "anyone in the White House." Then he couldn't be sure, because he's only been on the job a couple of months, and there were so many more important things that he had to think about, even though he couldn't identify one.

She asked him whether anyone in the WH had suggested an investigation to him.  He couldn't parse "suggest."  Harris offered him synonyms. "Infer?" "Hint?"

    Klobuchar letter to Mueller (5.00 / 2) (#39)
by CaptHowdy on Thu May 02, 2019 at 08:02:41 PM EST
    This is great

    Dear Special Counsel Mueller:

I write to request information related to the Report On The Investigation Into Russian Interference In The 2016 President Election, which was recently completed by your office.

On May 1, Attorney General Barr appeared before the U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary to testify about the evidence collected during the investigation and the findings described in the report. Unfortunately, on numerous occasions, Attorney General Barr was unable to speak to certain sections of the report or to the underlying evidence evaluated by your office.

I asked Attorney General Barr whether your office requested and reviewed any of the President's personal tax documents or the Trump Organization's financial documents. The Attorney General stated that he did not know and suggested that I ask you directly.

Unfortunately, Chairman Graham has made clear that he does not intend to call you to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee. Accordingly, I respectfully request that you provide answers to the following:

    1)      Did your office obtain and review President Trump's personal tax returns?

    a. If not, did you attempt to obtain these documents?
    b. If so, what years of returns did you obtain, and were the documents complete or were any redactions made to the documents?
    2)      Did your office obtain and review financial statements from the Trump Organization?

    a. If not, did you attempt to obtain these documents?
    b. If so, what years of statements did you obtain, and were the documents complete or were any redactions made to the documents?
In addition, I respectfully request that you provide the Committee with copies of any of President Trump's tax returns and the Trump Organization's financial statements that were obtained by your office to aid in our evaluation of the report and its conclusions.

    Sincerely,

Trump announced, at a Rose Garden event for the National Day of Prayer, the Administration's Religious Conscience Rule.  The new rule allows a very wide range of people, receptionists, health care professionals, boards of hospitals, to deny a patient's medical care if their personal religious beliefs get in the way. Punishment may include loss of federal funds.

Denying health care is not religious liberty, it is unconscionable discrimination against patients based on their medical needs, maternal health, gender, and sexuality. It could weaken public health efforts, such as vaccination programs; could certainly target gay, transgender patients and their children, as well as hamper women's health care delivery.

Medical standards, not religious beliefs, should control medical care. It is bad enough to refuse to bake a cake for a gay couple for religious reasons, but an entirely different matter to deny needed health care.

It may be reasonable to make accommodations for religious beliefs, such as shifting provision of care to another health professional.  However, this may not always be possible, for example, if a religious-affiliated hospital is the only one in a rural area. Hopefully, these piety advocates of health care refusal to patient not of their liking will pray on this.

Or most stripes.  Brett Stephens and his ilk hate Trump as much as we do.  That's enough for me.  We can all be snowflakes again when we have a functioning government.  We are miles from that right now and it's going to get worse before it gets better and we are going to need Brett Stephens, Max Boot and the rest before it's over.

You read more all the time about people who know Trump saying he will not willingly leave office if he loses in 20.  I think you would have to be an idiot to not take those warning seriously.  What single thing has he ever done to make that warning seem unwarranted?  We know with some degree of certainty when he leaves he will be indicted probably the same day.

He will do anything to prevent thing.  Anything in his power.  Including inciting his idiot fans to violence or starting multiple wars.  We will need the "reason" crowd when that happens.

The dispatcher tells Guyger police are almost there. Guyger continues to curse as the realization of what she's done continues to set in.
"I thought it was my apartment. I thought it was my apartment. Holy f**k."...
The killing sparked days of protest, and angry demonstrators demanded justice. Protesters interrupted a City Council meeting to demand accountability and police reform.
When then-Dallas County District Attorney Faith Johnson presented the manslaughter case to a grand jury, jurors upgraded the charge to murder, which Johnson explained meant that they felt Guyger's actions were "knowing" or intentional.

This week is 4.  It's directed by the guy who directed the season premier.  5 is directed by the same director who did last weeks episode.

(Spare me whining about the lighting.  I am so sick of that.  I did effects lighting for a living.  The lighting was amazing.  Dark was a choice.  And a brilliant one.  Learn to adjust yer damn tv)

The British actress, who plays Mother of Dragons Daenerys Targaryen in HBO's epic fantasy drama, on Wednesday told late-night comedian Jimmy Kimmel that Episodes 4, 5 and 6 "are all insane."

But one of them, in particular, is "going to be mental," she said.

"Episode 5 is bigger!" Clarke told Kimmel. "Episode 5 is huuhh," she added, with an appropriate arm gesture.

What?!? Even bigger than Sunday's epic Battle of Winterfell?

    Apparently so

    The final battle.

Also one more bit.  You can google this if you wish but the story from Martin himself was the story had 3 "holy shi+" moments.

One was Stannis burning his daughter alive.  One was the backstory of Hodors name.  The third is yet to come.

for episode 3 was garbage except for that one scene of the dragons above the clouds. You shouldn't have to adjust your TV for one particular episode, that's ridiculous.  At first I thought if I had a 4K TV it might look better but I've learned that wasn't really the issue.

Big battle scenes are tough to pull off and HBO wasn't up for the task this time and it wasn't just the lighting.  Don't get me started on Lady Mormont's final scene.

One was Stannis burning his daughter alive.  One was the backstory of Hodors name.  The third is yet to come.

That's important is they shot it at night.  For more than a month.  What you should understand is movies never do that.  Because it's dark.  They shoot what is called "day for night" which means they shoot it in the day time and people like me darken it in post

Which leads to jokes like "have you ever noticed that at night in movies everything is just sort of bluish but you can still see perfectly clearly?"

They intentionally shot it at night for authenticity.  It was beautiful.  More so because it is so hard to shoot at night.

I really wish people would shut up about it.

Having to explain the cinematography is like having to explain a joke.

Of course I'm going to keep watching.  I've seen every episode and need to see this trough but the show hasn't been the same since Jon Snow came back to life.

The last time Congress issued a contempt citation was in 2012 against Attorney General Eric Holder because DOJ refused to hand over documents for the House Republicans' snipe hunt in the "Fast & Furious" program. A judge ultimately ruled that the department had to comply with the congressional subpoena, which it subsequently did. The contempt order was then dismissed.

In 2008, the Democratic-controlled Congress issued contempt citations against former Dubya White House Counsel Harriet Miers and then-White House Chief of Staff Joshua Bolten. It was referred to the U.S. Attorney's office in D.C. for prosecution. Not surprisingly, that office declined to act.

(and, those candidates chasing bipartisanship), by Paul Krugman (NYT May 3)---Krugman wonders what would happen if either wins when it seems to him that each, in his own way, believes he has power of persuasion that will let him defy the reality of Republican politics.

Joe seems to believe good personal relationships will translate into bipartisan policy deals, perhaps re-running a movie we have seen before, starring B. Obama, who also thought he could personally transcend ideologies and power quests, spending time and energy trying to accommodate Republicans so as to sign-on to his legislative proposals.

Bernie, on the other hand, does not do bipartisanship.  He does not do unipartisanship, but does feel that he can convince voters directly to support his progressive policies.

The second tier (at present) of Democratic candidates does seem to get it (e.g., Elizabeth Warren, Kamala Harris)  but Joe seems stuck in the past when real bipartisanship sometimes happened, and Bernie appears to live in an imaginary future where a popular tidal wave washes away all political obstacles.

My reaction to Dr. Krugman is one of agreement on bipartisanship as rara avis, if not totally inoperable these days.  And, candidates who tout their ability to work together with Trump Republicans are suspect of being out-of-touch (this includes, in my opinion, some of the second tier candidates).

However, I do part company on his apparent dismissal of "electability" and, particularly, starting off with concerns for what Joe or Bernie might do if they win.

From my point of view, if either wins, they will had a successful administration minutes after their inauguration.  Indeed, either one could (and maybe should) then resign handing off to the v.p., get a big old atta boy, and ride off into the sunset.

My reaction to Dr. Krugman is one of agreement on bipartisanship as rara avis, if not totally inoperable these days

Since the reign of Reagan the GOP seems to have lost the need to worry about any appearance of bipartisanship.  Since Newt declared that politics should be war between the parties, no holds barred, kick them when they're down, etc.  the GOP has not shown a bipartisan bone in its body.

Today, bipartisanship is something that only Democrats need to profess (based on what we see in the mainline media), and is a non-issue for Republicans.  Republicans today are believed to be  bipartisan because both extremes of the party tolerate each other; witness the total surrender of the elected and senate confirmed to the will of Trump

Democrats should not compromise at all, not because they are partisan, but because they are right

The thing is not everyone is buying into paying $US1,500 at a minimum for a low end OLED TV.  Of course you could get a $US500 monitor and stream the show through your puter (this is what I do since I can also record it that way).

I can still remember as a kid going to a neighbor's house to watch their color TV when my family only had a black and white TV.  I have to say my OLED TV is that different from my older LCD TV.

Sometimes I have guests in the family room and watch on this TV.  One thing I have not done yet is try and watch The Battle of Winterfell on an old CTR TV.  Truth be told a CTR TV does have some advantages over LCDs in terms of  picture  quality due to how pixels are lit.

... the Farley tribute was seriously moving and I liked the bit with his 'family', which were all basically characters in his movies.  I also like that past members stopped by to help out, not sure if that was Sandler related or not.

While I don't like all his movies, I can't think of one I would call bad.  The thing I like, yeah there is a fair share of slapstick humor, but there is almost always a fairly poignant underlying message.  And like it or not, he is loyal to the his core actors, some of those people just really crack me up.

And in my opinion, deservedly so. By crossing lanes abruptly as the field came out of the far turn and entered the home stretch, Maximum Security interfered with at least two other horses, which might have caused a tragic spill had those jockeys not pulled up and slowed their mounts. At least one jockey rose in his irons, which was a clear indication that a collision had been averted.

Had this been any other race than the Kentucky Derby, Maximum Security would've been disqualified for the foul. The decision by Churchill Downs stewards to do so in this particular instance -- the very first time in the Derby's 145-year history that a first-place finish was voided by a foul -- is considered "controversial" only because there was so much money riding on the 4-1 favorite. So, credit those stewards for refusing to apply a double standard to a Triple Crown event.

In any case, a foul should not be conflated with cheating. Likely, Maximum Security was momentarily spooked by the roar of the 100,000-plus crowd in the Churchill Downs infield, and the horse reacted by moving abruptly off the rail at the quarter pole, from where he had been leading the field as they rounded the far turn toward the home stretch.

But regardless of its cause, clearly a foul had occurred, and two of the three jockeys who'd been affected immediately dismounted after the race and called upstairs to the track's stewards to report it. That foul was not readily observable to the TV audience in real time as the race was being run, but on slow-motion replay there's really no question about the near-collision and the subsequent call.

    Aloha.

Thing is horse racing rules/laws are at the state level and differ from state to state.  Folks in the know claim that if the race were run in NY Maximum Security would still have won based in some part in how far ahead at the finish.  Same thing would be true in several other states.  Not to mention international horse racing rules that govern horse racing in other countries.

Speculation is that the biggest fall out will be standard rules nation wide; not different in every state.

through out military history about  one bullet in 700+ hits an enemy.  Even with lots of ballistas that would mean 1400 shots fired if a ballista matched modern accuracy.

Danny ignoring a hidden fleet that seemed to uncloak like they had a Romulan cloaking device.  Even if Danny was not paying attention the Onion Knight's experience as a pirate should have come into play.

I have seen lots of rumors about Varys biting the dust; probably due to his plans to defeat Danny.

This could totally be a dodge but it really did seem like a WAH-wah ending for so much buildup.

Even though Arya Stark seemingly killed the Night King, shattering him into ice and causing all of his forces to crumble, the threat of the White Walkers may not be gone, according to Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.

During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Jimmy asked if we are for sure done with the White Walkers after the events of "The Long Night," and Benioff responded, "Yeah, we're not going to answer that."

When you add in the price of a ticket to Phuket the internet is cheaper.  You use to be able to also buy the latest DVDs of just released movies as well but The Pirates' Bay knocked the bottom out of that market.

by ScottW714 on Mon May 06, 2019 at 12:30:29 PM EST
...the install program would use an algorithm to validate.  So they would crack open the coding and reverse engineer the algorithm and create serial numbers.

I used to have a program I downloaded from Kazaa, you put in the software version and it would generate a serial number.  It worked about 50% of the time.  You could also download the programs at Kazaa.  Between that and music/movies, I had like a 3 year window where I didn't pay any licensing.

What really funny is I could never install the latast Photoshop because none of the serial numbers would work.  I ended up using v.5 because it was so old that it didn't validate online.  That is when I discovered shareware and ended up with GIMP which was, and still is, free.  I still use the Photoshop 5 for a couple things, but mostly I work in GIMP.

was, in my assessment, the tipping point for the demise of the Soviet Union. The denial of scientific fact, the immersion in lies, and the paralysis of fear In bringing unwanted truth to leaders provided the sarcophagus for the Soviet corpse.

In this true-life horror tale of a government refusing to acknowledge scientific fact and its ruthless demand for obedience, "Chernobyl" feels especially timely.

"What is the cost of lies?" one character muses at the opening.

In record time, the film is now the second-highest grossing movie of all time with $2.188 billion globally, passing the $2.186 billion global haul of "Titanic" in just 11 days and easily smashing the $2.04 billion total haul of its own predecessor "Avengers: Infinity War".

"Avatar," the current highest grossing movie of all time, took 47 days to reach where `Endgame' currently is. It's expected the James Cameron-directed blue alien film will lose its long-standing position in the weeks to come.
