Revised Open Thread (Mother's Day is Next Week)

I absolutely thought today was Mother's Day and put up an open thread called "Mother's Day Open Thread". Then I texted the TL kids to tell them I was on my way, and they responded, "Where are you going, Mothers Day is next week". So now I'm all tressed up (hair fixed up and dressed, not to be confused with "dressed up" )and no place to go. I guess I'll just read the news and check out places to to visit in Colombia, Ecuador, Costa Rica and Mexico.

It's still time for a new open thread, all topics welcome.

Washington(CNN) The US is deploying the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group and a bomber task force to the US Central Command region in the Middle East in response to "troubling" warnings from Iran, the White House announced Sunday.

A US official with direct knowledge of the situation tells CNN the threats were against both US maritime and land-based forces in the Middle East. The deployments are aimed specifically at deterring any Iranian military actions, the official added.

A statement from US national security adviser John Bolton reads, "In response to a number of troubling and escalatory indications and warnings, the United States is deploying the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group and a bomber task force to the US Central Command region to send a clear and unmistakable message to the Iranian regime that any attack on United States interests or on those of our allies will be met with unrelenting force."

"The United States is not seeking war with the Iranian regime, but we are fully prepared to respond to any attack, whether by proxy, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, or regular Iranian forces," the statement continues.

Two US officials tell CNN that the very public statements are aimed at deterring Iran. There is no indication any action by Iran is imminent.

    I've been working on losing a few kilos (5.00 / 3) (#9)
by CaptHowdy on Mon May 06, 2019 at 10:01:54 AM EST
The good news is it's working. I have dropped about 14 pounds since starting the end of March.

One thing I have found that works for those who might care is eating multiple smaller meals.  I've learned that breakfast is indeed important which I try to do, eggs cheese in a low card tortilla, about 9 and then try to eat small meals  roughly every 2-3 hours.

One thing I have found helpful is soup.  I started with frozen low cal meals.  Which is not as bad as it sounds.  They have gotten much better with them.  There is a line called Cafe Steamers I am partial to.  But i am learning to do it without frozen food.  By using smaller portions.  Soup is great for this.

Last week I made cream of asparagus soup.  This weekend I made cream of celery soup.  Today I am making cream of carrot soup.  They all freeze well.  All my cream soups are heavy on garlic and gourmet mushrooms and broiled rosemary chicken.  Added after the purée process.  And with the thickness achieved with veggies and a bit of sour cream instrpead of butter, cream and flour.

    This is a PSA.

    Check Out Quark (5.00 / 2) (#15)

I found Elli Quark online then it took a bit to track down in the store, but amazingly enough Target had it.  I am a total label reader, this stuff has got a fine looking label and the taste is really good.

It's replaced protein bars as my am snack.

I eat 3 meals and 3 snacks every day.

For almost 20 years and have never found it in the states.  They carry it at Target?!?!

It's the key ingredient in German cheesecake,  which if you haven't tried it is a much lighter, fluffier version of cheesecake, and IMO is even better tasting than the dense U.S. variety.  Probably won't help with anyone's diet, but definitely worth trying anyway.

I sure wish there was a way for you to just give me all of the kilos you don't want. My "skinny" clothes are getting loose because of the stomach problems.

With my odd hours, it's difficult to do the traditional breakfast/lunch/dinner, so I do the multiple snacks throughout the day too. Only I try to get all the calories I can - empty ones or not.

However, I'm very much a night owl. It is usually after 2a before I go to sleep and don't wake up until the crack of Noon - it was much more fun when I was young enough to take advantage of such sleep patterns.

Lots of time spent in bed not asleep when the stomach is bad too. Walk to the kitchen and grab something to eat and hurry back to bed before the pain gets too bad (the only relief is lying down).

Not how I saw my retirement going.

I have an app that I use when I come back from the grocery store. Before I put the food away, I scan the label into this program. When I want to keep track of what I eat, it gets the exact food instead of me having to search for foods in a database.

I was wondering how you felt about him, his publications regarding war crimes, and also the revelations about the DNC.

I am also curious about what you might think about  the treatment he has been receiving by the British, and the fate he might meet should he be extradited to the US.

I am inclined to feel what is happening to him as a serious assault on a free press, but I seem to be in a distinct minority.

    Ingredients:
1 kg (2 ¼ lb) large live snails
1 cup (250 ml) olive oil
Half cup (120 ml) red wine vinegar
    Salt
1 tablespoon chopped fresh oregano (optional)
1 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme (optional)
1 tablespoon chopped fresh rosemary (optional)

    Cooking Time:

    Cooking Directions:
    • Plunge the snails into cold water and remove and discard the membrane that covers the opening. Discard any snails that do not poke their heads out of their shells.
    • Put the snails in a colander and rinse well under cold running water to rid them of their mucus.
    • Heat the oil in a heavy pan and add the snails, flat side down. Cook over high heat, stirring once or twice, for about 10 minutes.
    • Pour the vinegar into the pan and stir well, scraping up any sediment from the base. Season with salt, add the herbs of your choice, and serve immediately.

Obviously, subjects such as freedom of the press, global warming, Julian Assange and Greta Thunberg, hold little interest for you as compared with ridding snails of mucus.

But it is very rude and kind of crude to insert your culinary predilections as a answer to serious questions by a new member of this site.

If you are disinterested in the issues I occasionally raise, simply ignore them. Posting unrelated recipes as a response is kind of infantile.

    Milopita (Greek Apple Cake)

    • 1 3/4 cup self rising flour
    • 1 teaspoon baking powder
    • 4 medium apples, peeled and cored
    • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
    • 1 1/2 sticks butter (3/4 cup)
    • 1/3 cup brown sugar
    • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
    • 2 teaspoons brandy, such as Metaxa
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    • 1 pinch of salt
    • 4 large eggs
    • 3/4 cup milk
    • 1/2 cup raisins
    • 1/2 cup coarsely chopped walnuts

How to Prepare Greek Apple Cake:
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
Sift the flour and baking powder together into a large bowl and set aside. Cut each of the apples in half and slice them really thin with a sharp knife. Place the apple slices in a large bowl and drizzle with lemon juice.

Grease the bottom and sides of a large Spring form pan using half of the butter.  Press the brown sugar into the bottom of the pan. Layer the apple slices on top of the brown sugar in an overlapping layer. Sprinkle the apple slices with the brandy and about half of the ground cinnamon. Dice the few extra apple slices that are remaining and place them in a small bowl.
Add the butter and granulated sugar to a medium bowl and beat on medium speed with an electric mixer. Add the eggs one at a time and beat as it is well combined. Add the rest of the cinnamon and a pinch of salt and beat well. Slowly beat in the milk until it is completely incorporated.
Set the mixer speed on low and slowly beat in the flour mixture until a thick batter forms. Turn off the mixer and stir in the raisins and walnuts.Place the batter into the pan and smooth the top with a rubber spatula. Sprinkle the batter with the remaining apple pieces.
Place the cake pan in the center of the preheated oven. Bake for about an hour, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let the cake cool in the pan about 15 minutes before transferring it to a serving plate.

Since my 4 year hiatus, TL has become Trump derangement central.  It's actually fairly remarkable how folks I consider to be reasonable and fair minded, lose their damn minds when it comes to Trump. I absolutely despise Trump, like to my core. I unplugged from news for about 4 months following the election.  But around here I have been accused of defending him, at least weekly.  Which, in reality, is pretty damn funny.

Like everyday it seems like someone alludes to something along the lines of 'Yeah, we got him now, it won't be long now, this is the start of the end'.

I feel like Joe Buck, who everyone accuses of being against their team, but in reality he's neutral.  Folks are so used to their homer announcers that fairness gets equated to bias.  There is no fairness when it comes to Trump and TL, and I am cool with that, but it doesn't mean I am jumping on the CraZy TraIn.

to be a part of the concern of Trump, and yet be apart from it. Detachment is not admirable, but it is understandable. Trump has saturated our lives and our very beings scream for a break.

Ordering the citizenry's priorities with the existential threat of Trump front and center, is not derangement.  It is, in reality, logical, critical and essential to survival of the country as we know it.  A claim of unfairness, be it to Trump or any other, is scorching.  So, I, for one, will be on the look out for beautiful things to say about Trump. And, I will use my copy of the Mueller Report for a foundational bonfire to this quest. But,  I may, necessarily, be on a four-year hiatus.

I follow a lot of things I don't write about because there isn't enough time. It's not that I have less time it is that reading the news has become a minefield. It takes so much longer to find articles without video and paywalls. By the time I've found and read acceptable articles, hours have gone by and there's not enough time to write.

I am paying for subscriptions to the NY Times and WSJ now -- and I pay hundreds of dollars every month for pleadings filed on PACER.

I am not in Trump derangement mode, I barely think about him any more. I also am not into presidential primaries. None of the frontrunning candidates appeal to me.

Things I follow that I don't write about much: ISIS, the college admimssions cases, drug cartels, events in Colombia and Ecuador and Mexico. Missing people, school shootings, sexual abuse and assault have never been on my radar.

I usually like to have something to say if I'm going to write about a topic. If you prefer, I can put up a post on topics you tell me you are interested in without analysis, but really, why would I be adding?

possibly dozens or hundreds where I have written about the importance of exercising one's right to remain silent. Many of them include the phrase, "the jails are filled with people who thought if they could only tell their side of the story, police would see it their way. It rarely happens."

Fifth Amendment rights, like all rights in the Bill of Rights, are there for good reason reason. Use them or lose them.

and ask about something that happened in my neighborhood that I had nothing to do with, what do I say?  "I won't talk to you without a lawyer"?

My common sense approach would be to never go into a police station voluntarily to be questioned. I'm not sure how to handle a situation where I might be a witness to someone else's crime.

I'm a normal middle class guy.  If I get arrested for something do I ask for a public defender or should I try to hire one?   I'm assuming legal fees vary quite a bit.  Do you still get the one phone call or was that a Hollywood myth?

I tried searching for these answers but couldn't find anything.  These questions are for everyone, not just Jeralyn.

Julian Assange, Teriyaki style. (none / 0) (#107)
by Donald from Hawaii on Thu May 09, 2019 at 04:24:46 PM EST
    Ingredients:
    • 1 Julian Assange
    • 1/2 cup plus 1/3 cup reduced-sodium soy sauce, divided
    • 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
    • 1/4 cup honey
    • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
    • 2 garlic cloves, minced
    • 2 tablespoons butter, divided
    • 3 large eggs, beaten
    • 2 cups cold cooked rice
    • 9 ounces French-cut green beans
    • 3 ounces pearl onions

In a small bowl, whisk 1/2 cup soy sauce, vinegar, honey, ginger and garlic. Place Julian Assange in a shallow dish, then pour half of the marinade over him; turn to coat. Cover and refrigerate overnight. Cover and refrigerate remaining marinade.

Drain and discard marinade. Grill Julian Assange, covered, over medium heat or broil 3-4 in. from the heat for 7-9 minutes on each side or until meat reaches desired doneness (for medium-rare, a thermometer should read 135°; medium, 140°; medium-well, 145°). Let him stand for 10 minutes before slicing.

Meanwhile, transfer reserved marinade to a small saucepan. Bring to a boil; cook until liquid is reduced by half. Set aside.

In a large skillet, heat 1 tablespoon butter over medium-high heat. Pour eggs into skillet. As eggs set, lift edges, letting uncooked portion flow underneath. When eggs are completely cooked, remove to plate. Chop eggs into small pieces; set aside.

In the same skillet, stir-fry rice in remaining butter over medium-high heat. Stir in the French-cut green beans, onions and remaining soy sauce.

Add eggs; cook and stir until heated through. Thinly slice Julian Assange across the grain; serve over rice. Drizzle with sauce mixture.

A side of fava beans and a nice Chianti are optional. If Julian Assange is unavailable due to extradition to Sweden to face sexual assault charges, substitute 1 beef flank steak of about 1.5-2 lbs.

    Enjoy.

And, as I recall, your initial response about Assange was pretty crude.

If people here are so disinterested in the fate of a publisher like Assange - who revealed information about war crimes - I am truly surprised.

I liken him to the NYTimes of the Pentagon Papers era - which - at that time - had a modicum of courage and professional integrity - and received condemnation from the government - but support from people on the left. Assange is receiving the same sort of condemnation and, in addition, personal threats from the government, but the left has abandoned him.

The assumption that I am a Russian - troll or otherwise - is really bizarre. I cannot fathom the connection between concern about an assault on freedom of the press - and any behavior befitting a troll.

...and I get posting gross stuff for the trolls, but since, you know, you are eating better, could we start posting recipes that are on the healthy side ?

I have been a real meat substitute mission.  I don't eat chicken, so finding healthy good tasting protein is something I am always trying to do.

Boca Burgers, flame grilled - Nothing new, I have been eating these for years because I really like the taste.  Doesn't taste like meat, but very good.
I don't eat them with bread, just ketchup & mustard.

Another favorite, Gardein meatless meatballs.  I serve these with Dominex Eggplant.  I have switched to avocado oil for cooking.  I make this once a week.

Lastly, and I don't have the recipe, but my wife makes a mean Kale Soup, tastes just like the Olive Garden's Zuppa Toscana, but using turkey sausage instead of Italian sausage.

    Similar Receipe

1 lb. Hot Italian sausage, casings removed (turkey Sausage)
    1 large onion, chopped
3 cloves garlic, minced kosher salt
    Freshly ground black pepper
    6 c. low-sodium chicken broth
    4 large russet potatoes, diced
1 bunch curly kale, leaves stripped and chopped
3/4 c. heavy cream (no way)
    4 slices cooked bacon, chopped
1/4 freshly grated Parmesan, for serving
    (My comments in parenthesis)

    • In a large pot over medium heat, cook sausage, breaking up with the back of a wooden spoon, until browned and no longer pink, 5 to 7 minutes. Transfer to a plate to drain.

    • Add onion to pot and let cook until soft, 5 minutes, then add garlic and cook until fragrant, 1 minute more. Season with salt and pepper. Add chicken broth and potatoes and cook until potatoes are tender, 23 to 25 minutes.

    • Stir in kale and let cook until leaves are tender and bright green, 3 minutes, then stir in heavy cream, sausage, and bacon and simmer 5 minutes more.

    • Season with pepper, garnish with Parm, and serve.

you do bait people here by taking positions you know they don't agree with. You also want to pick the topic of conversation. That's allowed in an open thread, but when no one responds, it means they aren't interested in conversing on the topic with you. When you keep raising the same topic over and over, as you have with Assange, you become like a clog in the open thread.

I can tell from your writing you are not here for a real discussion but for sport. I have no reason to ban you, but recipes are a good way to alert other readers what you think of a certain post or poster.

That said, please don't respond to every post of No Sides with a recipe. That kills the open thread  too, since no one wants to wade through them. One or two is enough.

I went to the VA CAU (emergency room in a clinic for civilians).  The doctor looked at my leg for maybe two minutes, called in her little friend, and said do the paperwork, get an ambulance and send him to the hospital emergency room.

Turns out I had DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis) commonly called a blood clot.  I had started a Keto diet four days before.  All the doctors said that was unrelated to the DVT and I could stay on the diet.

Bottom line is 28 April I went back to the VA for my monthly test.  I was at 232 on 25 Feb and was 206 on 28 April according to the scale at the VA.  My latest weight on my Garmin Index at home was 196.7.  Still have a way to go but I feel good about reaching my goal.

I have to say Keto is not cheap.  I have cut out all carbs and eat as much real food as possible.  One thing that still shocks me when reading food labels is how much sugar is in processed foods. Some foods don't just have sugar but corn syrup and cane sugar in addition to sugar. Not to mention how many chemical compounds with names I can't pronounce are in many foods.

On the up side I feel better than I have in some time.  Sugar and starch (carbs) are linked to inflammation in joints and all that seems to have gone away for me.  The key for me has been to find Keto friendly foods that I like to eat.  Searching the internet I found this ham and eggs with kimchi dish that I really like.  If you can find foods you like to eat it is less like a diet and more like a life style.

I tried Atkins years ago and lasted about three days.  The important thing I have learned is at least for me how you eat is as important as what or even how much you eat.

I, having nothing much better to do, have been experimenting the last few months through the winter weighing myself every day at the same time with my body in the same state to see exactly how much I can eat without gaining weight.  It seems I'm ok with pretty much anything less that 2000 calories a day.  But the interesting thing is I can eat the same amount of food, literally if you believe the calorie counts on those box dinners, and gain weight if I eat it the way I always have which is one large meal and one smaller meal and lose weight if I eat it in six or seven small portions through the day.

I have also been hitting the physical part more.  Stair master every day and at least two or three hours of trail bike a week.

by ragebot on Mon May 06, 2019 at 09:46:14 PM EST
I spent lots of time early on searching for recipes that sounded good and fixing them to see if they lived up to their billing; some did, others did not.

A lot of my success was due to finding sugar substitutes that I liked.  Now it does not even seem like I am on a diet.  I can have bacon and eggs, fish fried/sautéed in bacon grease, pork, steak, stone crab claws, cole slaw, and treats I make.  It is getting easier as I find more stuff I like to eat.  Getting out and walking, swimming, and the like is also important.

The Keto facebook groups I am in also offer help.  But those on it long term do not talk as much about weight loss as how much better they feel once they stop the over processed foods with too much sugar, starch, and strange chemicals.

...sugars not a big deal, occasionally I crave some ice cream, but for the most part I can pass on sweets.

But what bugs the hell out of me is when something says it has less sugar it really means its got some nasty sweetener like aspartame.  I cut out HFCS(high fructose corn syrup) in January.

I'll take the real deal since I don't consume much, but for breakfast cereal it was an issue and since I recently moved to gum with Xylitol I tried the crystallized Xylitol and it's a damn good substitute, tastes just like sugar with a little cooling effect, like menthol.  But most importantly it has an extremely low GI(glycemic index) number, like a 10th of sugar.

Calories are lower, but not substantially.  I don't think it's Keto compatible as it has a lot of carbs, just no fructose.
    --------------------

Not sure if you have one, but I am on my 3rd air fryer.  I have one for a couple years and it changed how I cook.  There are very few things that I don't cook or reheat in it.  It makes things crispy and it does it quickly.  My oven has fans in it so it has a convection oven setting, but it doesn't work nearly as fast or well.

And chocolate.  But ive learned to live with dark chocolate which is much better for you and in small doses.

One thing I have found helps me stay on track is to occasionally, maybe once a month, give in and have something really sinful.  Like a big sundae or a trip to the all you can eat Buffett.

But yeah, sugar not a big deal.  Don't do sodas,  never have.  I hate diet soda.  I have read some people are particularly sensitive to the taste of artificial sweeteners.  I am one.  I prefer cow pee to any diet soda.

And I have never really had any interest in doughnuts or other processed sweet crap.

But I can love a real serious desert.  Like Lava Cake with vanilla bean ice cream.

    Biggest shock about a Keto Diet (5.00 / 1) (#132)
by ragebot on Thu May 09, 2019 at 10:23:47 PM EST
is the cost.  As an example regular butter at Walmart is about 1/4 the cost of Kerry Gold Butter.  I picked up some of the last stone crab claws before the season ended and melted butter for them.  There was a noticeable difference in the solids in the bottom of the bowl of melted butter between the two.

Same huge cost difference when I switched from the generic Walmart sugar substitute to some of the top of the line stuff.  Without getting too far in the weeds there is a massive difference in how your body reacts to different sugar substitutes.  Some of them are really good; others not so much.

I had been eating a lot of easy to prepare foods; now4 I have to spend time fixing and cooking everything I eat.  I am also in some facebook groups that offer support and advice on Keto diets.  The bottom line is that almost none of the store bought stuff is good for Keto; you have to fix it yourself.

One of the keys to successful Keto is minimizing carbs.  I thought the grated cheese I was buying was OK; but it seems they put starch (carbs) on it to keep it from sticking; so you have to grate cheese yourself.  I suspect as time goes by I will learn other stuff like this.

One thing used to attract people to Keto is you can eat all the bacon you want.  Thing is if you read the label on bacon it often has strange chemicals in it.  I have to drive to a small town about 15 miles away to a soul food butcher to buy pork belly they cut in to bacon with no added chemicals.  Not to mention if you look at the label on most of the meat at markets they have added water, seasoning, and sometimes sugar.

Going Keto takes more time shopping and fixing food, and clean up as well.  There is also a learning curve.  Not just in figuring out what foods you should be eating; but which ones you like to eat.  As an example there are several good sugar substitutes and all are acceptable.  Problem is there is no agreement on which one tastes best, kinda like some folks like chocolate and some vanilla.

Another big change for me is what is called IF (Intermediate Fasting) which basically means not eating three meals a day.  It is not for everyone and plenty of folks on Keto eat three, or even five meals, a day.  For me I drink coffee at say 8:00AM, and again at 10:00AM.  Maybe I will have a small snack; but often I don't eat till supper around 5:00PM when I will have my main meal of the day.  The theory is while we were sorta taught to eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner there is no real reason three meals a day should be the rule; you should eat when you are hungry.

The two biggest stumbling blocks for most folks starting Keto are not getting enough sleep (we talked about this before) and not drinking enough water.  Even if you do everything else right even failing on one of these two things will result in failure.

On the upside I have not taken any ibuprofen or acetaminophen since a week or so after I started Keto.  I feel better and have more energy.  I have no doubt I will be able to follow the Keto diet long term.  I already have a long list of Keto friendly foods I like and enjoy to eat.  Many of the folks in my facebook groups talk about going Keto being a lifestyle you don't give up.

While I talk about Keto it does not have to be all or nothing.  Kinda like strict scrutiny, intermediate scrutiny, and rational basis you can do Keto, Dirty Keto, and sorta Keto with reducing carbs.  In fact many folks suggest you start by reducing carbs (average diet is 250-300 grams of carbs a day); while a pure Keto diet would be 15-20 grams of carbs a day.

    Hope this helps

Keto and Atkins differ (none / 0) (#156)
by ragebot on Sat May 11, 2019 at 08:29:46 PM EST
in some important ways.  Keto gets the majority of calories from fat while Atkins gets the majority of calories from protein.  Atkins is a three stage process with introductory, weight loss, and lifetime while Keto stays the same.  Atkins also seems to allow more sugar and carbs.

Here is a link with more details.

I notice a lot of store bought Atkins products contain a lot more sugar, sugar alcohol, or rely on extra fiber to reduce carbs that are in the food.

Keto seems to be a lot more DIY where you have to shop for Keto friendly ingredients and make the food yourself while you can buy Atkins branded products at the store.  Just my two cents but eating as little processed food as possible seems to have reduced the inflammation in my tired old joints and I suspect it has other health benefits as well.  It is also more expensive (and time consuming shopping and preparing) Keto friendly meals.

by ragebot on Sun May 12, 2019 at 03:50:45 PM EST
sugar and carbs contributing to joint inflammation.  Not saying that is the only source but a lot of folks are eating way too much sugar and there are hidden carbs everywhere.  Another consideration is how much water is needed when you consume different foot groups.  You need about 1 gram of water for every gram of carbohydrate to stay hydrated, 3gs for every g of fat and 9gs for every gram of protein.  Protein also produces more waste that has to be eliminated.

Not saying to eliminate any of the three, just that it is way too easy to over do them.  Fat is the hardest to over do because eating it is so satisfying; carbs the easiest, especially carbs in sugar.

    Executive Privilege (5.00 / 5) (#90)
by Peter G on Thu May 09, 2019 at 11:56:01 AM EST
Let me go on record saying: (1) The claim of "Executive Privilege" against disclosure to Congress of the unredacted Mueller Report is flat-out frivolous (in the legal sense of the word - having no good-faith basis). Executive Privilege protects the privacy of deliberative communications between the President and his/her staff and advisers. The Mueller Report is not that, nor is there any view of it that would make it that. Total b/s.  (2) The claim of Executive Privilege against Congress calling former White House counsel Don McGahn to testify is facially on point ... until you see that Tr*mp waived that privilege by voluntarily disclosing publicly his version of the otherwise-private conversations (i.e., "I never told him to get DOJ to fire Mueller."). You cannot assert a legal privilege that protects the privacy of communications after choosing to abandon that privacy.

The watch's report on last night's sleep:

...I have been to Coco twice, both times were with the fellas.  But I fell in love with it, small fishing village with lots of expats and some developement, enough that the infrastructure is American friendly, roads/internet/water, the hot kind.

Last time I went I used VRBO and loved it.  It is so nice to stay in an actual house/condo rather than a hotel.  This time I am taking my wife and we are on a mission to check out retirement cities/property.  Americans can and do own land in CR.  Housing is somewhat cheaper, but the big difference is financing is almost non-existent in 3rd world countries.  Property taxes are a fraction of the US, like a quarter of one percent.

Amazingly enough, the owner of the house we are renting is thinking about selling.  It's very odd that we are on this mission to find out we are staying at a place that could be purchased.

    Fun facts/oddities about Costa Rica.

    • They have no formalized address system, directions are basically down the hill to the old oak tree and hang a left at the big blue house.  For the most part no street numbers and many small streets are un-named. From what I understand, this is a source of pride for Ticos & Ticas.  The house we are renting has a name, but the road to it does not.

    • Costa Rica does not have an army, it was abolished in the 40's.  It banned hunting as a sport in 2012.

    • While it is in the Caribbean, it has never had a direct hit by a hurricane/tsunami.  It does have earthquakes.

    • Costa Rica has devoted over a quarter of its land to national parks, wildlife reserves, and protected lands.

    • Costa Rica accounts for only 0.03 percent of the earth's surface (has only 19,700 sq mi). However it contains nearly 6 percent of the world's biodiversity.

Mike Pompous: Melting Sea Ice Presents "new opportunities for trade"

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Monday praised the Arctic region -- and its rapidly shrinking levels of sea ice -- for its economic opportunities, despite continued warnings about the catastrophic effects of climate change.

"The Arctic is at the forefront of opportunity and abundance," Pompeo said in remarks in Rovaniemi, Finland. "It houses 13 percent of the world's undiscovered oil, 30 percent of its undiscovered gas, an abundance of uranium, rare earth minerals, gold, diamonds, and millions of square miles of untapped resources, fisheries galore."

It's hard to believe that the leaders of the United States are so incredibly stupid and small minded.

has made the US an outcast nation.

Delegates from Arctic nations - Canada, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Russia, Sweden and the US - had gathered in Finland to discuss balancing climate change with resource development in the region.

The council meeting ended without a joint final statement from council members, after the US delegation balked at the inclusion of the phrase "climate change". It marked the first time the Arctic Council had failed to produce a declaration since 1996.

Pompeo is affiliated with the Evangelical Presbyterian Church. Pompeo serves as a local church deacon and teaches Sunday school.
In 2014, Pompeo told a church group that Christians needed to "know that Jesus Christ as our savior is truly the only solution for our world". In 2015 in a talk at a church, Pompeo said that "politics is a never-ending struggle ... until the Rapture." - Wiki

    enter the blood stream...
It took just one day of use for several common sunscreen ingredients to enter the bloodstream at levels high enough to trigger a government safety investigation, according to a pilot study conducted by the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, an arm of the US Food and Drug Administration....

...The four chemicals studied -- avobenzone, oxybenzone, ecamsule and octocrylene -- are part of a dozen that the FDA recently said needed to be researched by manufacturers before they could be considered "generally regarded as safe and effective."

As I mentioned in a thread years ago, I try not to use sunscreen unless I'm going to be in direct sun for a significant amount of time.  I used to be better about avoiding oxybenzone but the sunscreen I've been using on my significant outdoor days has it. I'm going to try to switch back to zinc oxide. There a new kind that is advertised as "clear".

I recently dumped Netflix.  Im going to have to do CBS streaming soon.  They have the new Star Trek which has been getting great reviews.

And I just read they are doing a big budget R rated limited series of The Stand.

Which really is maybe Kings best.  It's been needed for so long.  There was that miniseries in the 90s which was not horrible but it was network tv in the 90s so....

Like IT The Stand could not be done in one movie.  Or really even 2.  It's epic in every way.  I'm very excited

Stephen King shares his excitement about The Stand's upcoming limited series, which boasts a bigger budget and more violence than 1994's adaptation. While King's work has been turned into movies and TV shows for basically his entire writing career, the horror master is currently seeing a noted uptick in adaptations of his material. This fall will see IT: Chapter Two arrive to continue the story of the Losers' Club vs. Pennywise, a Pet Sematary remake recently hit theaters, Hulu is readying season 2 of Castle Rock, and this November sees King's The Shining sequel Doctor Sleep become a movie

Also on the way though is a CBS All Access limited series adaptation of King's apocalyptic epic The Stand, directed by Josh Boone. The Stand was originally developed as a series of films to be directed by Boone, but the project eventually morphed into its current 10-hour limited series format. CBS All Access continues to try its best to grow as a competitor to big streaming players like Netflix and Hulu, and to do so it needs to play host to content with big existing name value such as The Stand

The Stand was of course previously adapted into a 1994 ABC miniseries, which was pretty well-received all things considered, but fell victim to some of the creative limitations inherent to airing on network TV in the 1990s. Thankfully, during a recent appearance on The Stand miniseries director Mick Garris' Post Mortem podcast, King let it be known how excited he is for this new take on his gargantuan book, which will have much more freedom when it comes to resources and adult content than the original.

Really the thing I'm most excited about is, first of all, we've got two more hours to tell the story. And second, we're free of all those things that held us back with [the original mini-series]. Not only is the budget bigger... we're free... in terms of language, in terms of violence... in a way that we weren't with the original. CBS All Access would really like this to work. And they've put a lot of muscle behind it. So I'm hopeful. But it's early days yet... so. The casting isn't complete. My son Owen has written some of the scripts, and they're terrific. So. It's good.

Looking at King's IMDB page is staggering. He has 64 titles that he is somehow involved in that are in development or production.

We rarely watch TV. I think my husband and I must be the only people in the US who have not watched GoT.
Thanks to all the comments here, I atleast know which shows I should watch when I get around to it someday.

Might have to get an HBO free trial so I can watch the Deadwood movie though.

I said that in an earlier comment.  It was actually kind of obvious misdirection I thought.   Good.   Jewelry and all.  But I was not fooled.

Remember.  No spoilers has been requested.

And in this case IMO spoiling would be a capital offense.

2012 traveling in my Sprinter van to view the solar eclipse and looking at boats.  Bought my boat in late October of that year and was unaware of GOT.  No big shock that I was not watching much TV of any type.

Once I stopped living on dirt I had no access to TV on a regular basis.  On the other hand wifi is a staple in most marinas and harbors.  No big shock that boaters have an affinity to pirates in general and thepiratesbay web site in particular.  One of the first things I learned was that cruisers often have large collections of digital files of movies and TV programs.  My introduction to GOT was when I got five gigs of 'entertainment'.  It included Season 1 and Season 2 except for episode 9, but did have episode 10.  Talk about a hole in the story line, the Battle of Blackwater was missing.

Truth be known until I started living on dirt again in 2018 I was not watching GOT on TV; rather via streaming or more likely a digital file someone gave to me.

Thing is there are fewer eyeballs are watching TV, more people are cutting cable, streaming, or simply pirating digital files.

I have almost finished refitting my boat and expect once hurricane season ends I will be heading down island again and no longer watching TV.

Doesn't mean what it used to.   I spend lots of time watching things like prime and Hulu and Netflix on my tv because it's a smart tv.  You don't need cable to watch tv.

But I like having it.  Not just for the original programming which gets better every year but I end up catching movies I would never pay to see forgot about.

the first episode of this season, and couldn't stand it. I wrote in the Passover open thread:

I tried to watch GOT for the first time ever last week during its season premiere and couldn't concentrate on anything but counting the number of seconds between speaking lines. A few were over 20 seconds where the viewer just sits there staring at the face of the character who just spoke one line. No actor should need 20 plus seconds to convey an emotion, and no viewer should need 20 plus seconds to let the emotion sink in.

Then again, no one here seems to watch what I watch, so maybe it's me.

But it's worth repeating for anyone interested in every watching the series that while it never IMO a good idea to start watching something in the eight season GOT is the absolute worst possible show to not start from the beginning.

One of the reasons people love it is the world that's been created and the history of that world that goes back far beyond the first season of the show.  If you don't understand that you really won't understand anything.  And it's not like it could even be explained to you.  You would have to literally hit pause after every line of dialog and explain each word in context.

I realize that probably sounds like hyperbole but I think any fan would agree.

I mean, you can like the show or not but even if you like it you will not understand it if you don't start from the beginning.

As far as the pauses, I can almost guarantee a fan could explain the reason for them.

James Corden had a very funny segment on it where they made one member of the staff watch from season 1 to season 7 without leaving the room. They brought him in food, and sometimes he had guests. Obviously, since the whole world loves it, it's probably just me. But I feel the same way about El Senor de los Cielos  you do about GOT  -- with a cast of hundreds over the last six seasons, it'd be impossible to explain the evolution and who everyone is and what their place is to someone who has never seen it.

I certainly don't mean that anyone shouldn't watch GOT, only that it's not for me.
